About the Department

The Department of Economics at Georgia State University is nationally recognized for its research, teaching, and service in economics and policy analysis. The department offers a range of degree programs at all levels, including the Bachelor of Science in Economics, Master of Arts in Economics, Ph.D. in Economics, and a variety of interdisciplinary programs. The department is home to a large group of 30 full-time faculty members who are internationally known for their research on public, labor, health, urban and environmental, and experimental economics. Position Description

The Department of Economics of the Andrew Young School of Policy Studies at Georgia State University invites applications for the Bernard B. and Eugenia A. Ramsey Chair and Professor. This endowed chair position will provide the Professor with generous resources to support research and student success initiatives with an initial term of five years and will be renewable upon successful evaluation.

While the position is open to researchers in any field, applicants who can contribute to one or more of the following are particularly encouraged: 1) research and teaching that complement our existing strengths in applied microeconomics, including: public, health, labor/education, urban/environmental, and experimental; 2) the ability to teach econometrics at the graduate level; and 3) record of external funding and demonstrated potential to interact with the Georgia Policy Labs ( https://gpl.gsu.edu ), which is focused on child, family, and education policy.

As a leader in the Andrew Young School renowned for its influence on public affairs, the Ramsey Chair and Professor will contribute to shaping the future of economics education, research, and community impact, and drive strategic initiatives that align with the university’s commitment to student success, innovation, and engaged research. The position offers extensive opportunities to collaborate with public, nonprofit, private, and philanthropic organizations in Atlanta and beyond, where alumni and partners are deeply engaged in creating positive change in their communities. With access to world-class research centers, cutting-edge facilities, and a supportive cohort of thought leaders across the university, the Ramey Chair and Professor will have the tools and resources to drive innovation in economics and policy.

The Ramsey Chair and Professor will join other new leaders at Georgia State University during a pivotal point in the institution’s history. In 2021, Georgia State welcomed Dr. M. Brian Blake as the university’s eighth president, and in 2023, Dr. Nicolle Parsons-Pollard was appointed Provost and Executive Vice President of Academic Affairs. In 2024, Dr. Thomas J. Vicino joined the Andrew Young School of Policy Studies as its eighth dean. The Ramsey Chair will have a unique opportunity to define and implement new initiatives informed by the strategic plan Blueprint to 2033: Our Place, Our Time.

Qualified candidates should have a record of publications and sponsored research appropriate for tenure and appointment at the rank of Professor at Georgia State University, with the possibility of promotion to Professor upon hire. Applicants should hold a Ph.D. in economics or a closely related discipline. The ideal applicant will have an accomplished record of publication, external funding, leadership in the field, and the ability to mentor graduate students. Candidates will be considered until the position is filled.

This position is located on the Atlanta campus of Georgia State University and requires in-person, on campus-based work. The Andrew Young School maintains a flexible work environment. This position is planned to begin August 2025.

Required Experience

Candidates must have an academic record suitable for tenure and rank at full professor in the Andrew Young School.

Required Education

A Ph.D. in economics or a closely related discipline.

Preferred Qualifications/Experience

Preferred qualifications include the ability to work with Georgia Policy Labs on external grants to support research, teaching, and the outreach mission of the labs; experience with and ability to teach both undergraduate and graduate-level courses in economics, including econometrics; experience with developing, maintaining, and expanding relationships with government and community partners; familiarity with management of funds to support student and faculty success; a demonstrated record of academic leadership; and experience with teaching, student mentoring, and curriculum development.
