The South Dakota State University School of Design invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Architecture to begin no later than August 2025. This is a full-time, 9-month, benefit eligible appointment and the position reports to the Director of the School of Design. The position is typically 60% teaching, 30% research, scholarship and creative activity and 10% service.


The School of Design has three accredited-built environment majors: architecture, landscape architecture and interior design. The School of Design also includes visual arts: graphic design, and studio arts. Collectively, School faculty form a collaborative teaching and research environment that values cross-program and interdisciplinary initiatives. The successful candidate will contribute to building national and international stature and recognition for the discipline, School and University.

SDSU offers a 4-year Bachelor of Fine Arts in Architecture and a 2-year NAAB accredited Master of Architecture degree. Architecture has a unique mandate to remain a small program of no more than 220 students, making it one of the smallest architecture programs in the USA working within a fabric of small agrarian and mining cities. POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES :
  • Teach courses within the professional curriculum, such as design studios, lectures, seminars, and workshops.
  • Carry out a dynamic and robust agenda of research, scholarship and creative activity.
  • Extend research/scholarship/creative activity agenda into the teaching environment.
  • Provide service to the discipline, university, and community.
  • Teach in multi-disciplinary courses within the School of Design.
DISCIPLINARY CONTENT AREAS :
Architectural building design, technology, sustainable construction, studio pedagogy, design process, and professional practice.

SALARY :
The salary is commensurate with qualifications, minimum of $70,000. We offer a generous retirement plan that includes 6% matching, 9.34 hours of sick leave each month, and eleven paid holidays. Relocation benefits are available per university’s guidelines.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS :
  • Professional degree in Architecture or related field from a NAAB accredited institution or international equivalent by time of appointment.
  • PhD in Architecture or a related field by time of appointment.
  • Potential to develop and teach academic coursework in one or more of the disciplinary content areas.
  • Potential to develop a peer-reviewed research/scholarship/creative activity agenda in the discipline, especially design process and design pedagogy.
  • Effective written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills.


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS :
  • Professional practice experience in Architecture or a related design field.
  • Record of service within the discipline and/or profession.
