Position Summary: Position Summary: The Foreign Language department is seeking a Japanese adjunct professor to substitute and/or teach Elementary and Intermediate level Japanese language courses in the evening on Zoom or in person. JCCC is located in Overland Park, KS, the second largest city in the state of Kansas and part of the greater Kansas City Metro. The Kansas City Metro is known for its museums, restaurants, and music and art scenes. JCCC is similarly dedicated to creating and maintaining a rich cultural community, with an award-winning contemporary art museum and center for the performing arts located on campus.
The Foreign Language Department is part of the Communications Division. Many of our students are non-traditional, military veterans, immigrants, international and first-generation college students. JCCC has a diverse student population and is dedicated to increasing its diversity.
The successful applicant for this job will teach the equivalent of 5-10 credit hours per semester in Japanese or will serve as a substitute for day and/or evening courses. This person will perform other duties expected of adjunct faculty, to include collaborating and working successfully with other full-time and adjunct faculty in the Foreign Language department and other duties as assigned.
Additional responsibilities:
Provide extra and co-curricular opportunities for Japanese language students.
Participate in the planning and administration of all departmental initiatives.
Participate in on-campus events promoting languages.
Complete ACTFL and/or other departmental training.
Incomplete applications will not be considered.
Candidates will be interviewed using zoom and will be asked to demonstrate a 30 minute Zoom class.
Required Qualifications:
- M.A. degree in Japanese or language pedagogy, literature, culture, second language acquisition, applied linguistics, or related field with native or near native fluency (JLPT N1 level)
- Demonstrated knowledge of using technology in the classroom
- Demonstrated understanding of the climate of post-secondary institutions
- Demonstrated knowledge of ACTFL World-Readiness Standards for Learning Languages
- Demonstrated ability to teach elementary and intermediate level Japanese language courses
- Demonstrated excellent communication and collaboration skills
- Demonstrated knowledge of using technology in teaching
- Demonstrated 2 years teaching experience at the post-secondary level and/or 4 years of high school teaching experience
- PhD in Japanese, East Asian Languages or Cultures or Linguistics with a focus on the Japanese language
- Demonstrated ability to teach Elementary and Intermediate level Japanese language courses
- Demonstrated ability to teach online using zoom or a platform similar to zoom
- Documentation from ACTFL (OPI) of advanced, mid or higher in Japanese
- Ability to teach Chinese, French, German, Japanese or Spanish with HLC credentials
