Student Services Advisor

 

The University of Vermont is seeking applications for the position of Student Services Advisor.

 

Work to expand direct and individualized advising services to Black, Indigenous, People of color (BIPOC) students. Provide holistic advising, to include: academic; developmental; cultural and personal guidance as needed. Develop, administer and assess wellness initiatives. Create and maintain collaborative relationships in a network of support with institutional offices including the colleges, Counseling Center, TRIO programs etc. and administer Mosaic Center/Career Services collaborative initiative. Coordinate and implement support programs such as the Sisterhood Circle/Brotherhood Programs, Rest Stop, Knock & Talk, Community Meetings etc. Provide advisement – along with the Coordinator for Student Leadership Development & Programs – to BIPOC student affiliated clubs and groups. Collaborate and train as needed to enhance BIPOC student retention and success by developing programs to enhance the development of cultural and social capitol within the BIPOC student community. Serve on institutional committees to continually improve advocacy efforts and represent constituents. Reports to the Assistant Director of the Mosaic Student Center. 

 

Minimum Qualifications (or equivalent combination of education and experience)

Bachelor’s degree in Student Personnel, Psychology, Education or higher education related field and two years related experience required. Commitment to diversity, social justice and fostering a collaborative multicultural environment. Demonstrated understanding of the experience of racially and/or ethnically diverse people and communities, particularity at predominantly white Institutions. Evidence of work with communities of color in leadership education preferred. Effective written and oral skills. Ability to work independently and in a fast paced environment. Experience with counseling and/or teaching individuals and groups. 

 

Desirable Qualifications

  • Demonstrated commitment to race work and racial justice.
  • Ability to serve the “whole” student and support the intersections of identity. Ability to foster and support growth in young adults – empower BIPOC students and serve as an ally. Ability to maintain boundaries with the students. 
  • Knowledgeable about racial identity development and experiences of BIPOC students in a PWI environment
  • Ability to plan and implement small and large scale programs and projects, presentation and facilitate conversations (i.e., creation of assessments)
  • Investment in educational institutions and the willingness to work for equity of access
  • Ability to provide counsel to students, advocate, network, handle student crisis and manage student case load.
