Description
The Natural Sciences Department at Flagler College in Saint Augustine, FL, invites applications for a full-time, academic year faculty position in Physics to begin August 2025. Appointment at the Assistant Professor rank is anticipated; however, higher ranks will be considered.
We seek a well-rounded scientist and educator with a strong dedication to teaching at the undergraduate level. Preference will be given to applicants who can demonstrate an engaging, active teaching style utilizing various pedagogies, as well as an ability to mentor undergraduate research, as Flagler College is an undergraduate teaching college. The successful applicant will primarily be responsible for teaching Physics I w/lab to support our Coastal Environmental Science and Biology programs, and eventually develop a second semester course of general Physics. They will also be encouraged to develop upper division elective courses in their areas o interest as well as new science classes within the Core (General Education) program. There are additional opportunities to teach innovative, intensive courses to the broader student population as part of our new FlagSHIP program. The full-time teaching load at Flagler College consists of 12 contact hours per week of the semester.
The area of specialization is open, but we would particularly value expertise that intersects physics with our degree programs of Biology and Coastal Environmental Science. The successful applicant will be expected to develop an active research program that engages undergraduates in authentic research projects. Ideally, this research should also lead to peer-reviewed publications and/or undergraduate research presentations at regional and national conferences within the applicant’s discipline.
Founded in 1968, Flagler College is a historic, teaching-oriented private college of about 2,500 undergraduates. The college has a young but vibrant science program and a growing emphasis on STEM education – as evidenced by the launch of the Biology major in Fall 2024. The location of the college in Saint Augustine, FL, provides easy access to research sites, such as the ecosystems of the intracoastal waterway that are within walking distance, as well as nearby connections to the Atlantic Ocean, coastal maritime hammock forests, Anastasia State Park, and the Guana Tolomata Matanzas National Estuarine Research Reserve, the latter of which we regularly collaborate.
Qualifications
Applicants should have a PhD in Physics or related field that allows them to teach both Physics I and Physics II with a laboratory section. ABD candidates will be considered.
