Position Description:

The Hite Institute of Art + Design at the University of Louisville invites applications for a tenure-track  Associate Professor position in Graphic Design, set to begin in the 2025 academic year. We seek a designer who is deeply committed to advancing the field of graphic design, with a keen interest in exploring new ideas, technologies, and practices that will shape the future of our program.

As a faculty member in Graphic Design, you will be expected to engage in rigorous creative work and research, aligning with the high standards of tenure expectations. Your responsibilities will include teaching undergraduate and graduate courses, fostering a studio culture of intellectual curiosity and technical excellence. A comprehensive understanding of the evolving landscape of design, including emerging methods and technologies, is essential. Additionally, you will contribute to the academic community through such service roles as committee work, curriculum development, and mentoring students.

The ideal candidate for our growing program will demonstrate expertise in a specialized area of graphic design and competency in a range of topics from typographic detail and visual identity to user experience and digital media. While the primary focus will be on graphic design, we seek a designer who values collaborating with industry and other disciplines to enrich the educational experience and prepare students for the complexities of the professional design landscape.

Qualified candidates hold an MFA, MDes, or PhD in Graphic Design or a related field by the start date and have a portfolio of professional work, along with evidence of ongoing creative research.

We prefer applicants with a proven record of accomplishment in graphic design/visual communication, supported by three or more years of professional practice. College-level teaching experience, including graduate teaching assistantships, will be given preference. A demonstrated commitment to fostering diversity and inclusion within both academic and professional settings, along with the ability to work effectively in collaborative environments, is highly desirable.

Not sure this is you? We encourage you to apply if you meet the required qualifications and have interest in this position. Research indicates that women and members of marginalized populations tend not to apply to jobs when they think they do not meet the qualifications, when, in fact, they often do.

Review of applications will begin on January 11, 2025 and continue until the position is filled. Applications must be submitted online through the University of Louisville's application portal.

In addition, candidates should submit the following materials as email attachments to Search Committee Chair, Trysh Wahlig, trysh.wahlig@louisville.edu. Please title the email Graphic Design Search.
