We are seeking a WIC Nutrition Services Specialist who will provide nutrition counseling to high-risk WIC participants, with the goal of improving client knowledge and behaviors regarding nutrition and wellness. The WIC Nutrition Services Specialist is responsible for the nutrition education training of the WIC staff and development, implementation, and monitoring of the Nutrition Education Plan and Breastfeeding Promotion Program for the WIC Program to ensure compliance with agency, state and federal policies and regulations. Under supervision of Senior WIC Nutritionist, duties for this position include, but are not limited to:
Specific Responsibilities/ Duties
- Establishes and maintains a care plan for each WIC client identified as High Risk.
- Provides nutrition counseling sessions for individuals identified as High Risk.
- Conducts health assessments, to include measurements of stature, weight, hemoglobin and dietary evaluation.
- Refers clients to other health, food assistance, social services programs; issue WIC benefits to certified clients; researches and discusses problems with appropriate personnel and takes suitable measures to resolve issues.
- Approves the issuance of specialty infant formulas and other nutritionals prescribed by physicians.
- Develops and reviews nutrition education materials for accuracy, age appropriateness and cultural appropriateness.
- Provides in-service training for staff regarding nutrition education and counseling skills, including motivational interviewing, patient-centered, and trauma informed counseling techniques.
- Observes counseling skills of nutrition staff.
- Develops training programs for professional and paraprofessional staff; conducts staff training as needed and appropriate.
- Leads the development, implementation, and monitoring of the Nutrition Education Plan and Breastfeeding Promotion Program
- Performs certifications and other clinic activities as needed.
- Work closely with other team members.
- Participates in team/staff meetings; attends in-service meetings and applicable workshops.
- Stays current with best practices in maternal and child nutrition.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Ensures proper orientation and training of new hires and conducts individualized training with staff that may need additional assistance.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science in Nutrition or related field required.
- Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
Preferred Qualifications
- Supervisory experience.
- Fluent in Spanish language.
- Three years related WIC experience, including prior experience working effectively with low-income, multi-cultural population(s) and the public, preferred.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.
The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
