South Dakota State University ( SDSU ) Department of Housing & Residential Life ( HRL ) is offering an exciting career opportunity as a Residence Hall Director. We are looking for a creative and innovative professional to join us in leading an energetic and dynamic team of paraprofessionals as well as a person committed to creating an inclusive environment for our students and staff. The Residence Hall Director is an essential team member who helps live out the student facing portion of HRL’s mission. This position is in Brookings, South Dakota and is a 12-month, full-time, benefit-eligible, live-in position.
The purpose of Housing and Residential Life is to provide an exemplary on campus living experience for South Dakota State University students. This is achieved through community building, engagement, premiere facilities, and creating a positive relationship with our residents that begins at the application process and continues throughout their on campus living experience.
At South Dakota State University, Housing & Residential Life oversees 19 residence halls and apartment buildings along with several smaller properties offering a community development experiences and opportunities in order to aid students transition to on campus living. HRL serves over 4,000 individual residents annually and has a team of over 160 paraprofessional and professional staff members.

RESPONSIBILITIES :
The Residence Hall Director is a live-in staff member who develops and administers a comprehensive hall program meeting the goals of Housing & Residential Life, Division of Student Affairs and Enrollment Management, and South Dakota State University.
This position supports the overall operation of HRL by providing strong supervision and leadership to the live-in paraprofessional staff and provides leadership and direction to all students and staff living in the assigned residence hall. RHD’s are responsible for student staff supervision, training and development, Hall Government advising, outreach and counseling of residents, and problem solving within the hall. Reporting directly to the Assistant Director for Residential Life, the Residence Hall Director is an essential member of the leadership team of the Department of Housing & Residence Life.
- Hall Management and Supervision (45%)
- Select, train, supervise, and evaluate Community Assistants. Which includes:
- Directing work of student staff and being a resource for student staff Meeting with staff on a regular basis including facilitating weekly staff meetings with CA staff, and meeting with CAs on a bi-weekly basis. Provide on-going developmental opportunities.
- Understanding and using student development theory with assisting student leaders in areas of personal, academic, and leadership growth.
- Individual and group development. Overseeing and implementing administrative functions of the building.
- Effectively communicating with students, staff, and campus partners.
- Counseling and providing support. Knowledge of facility and operations including collaboration with custodial and maintenance staff.
- Collaborate with central office staff.
- Facilitate and oversee administrative processes such as: room/hall change process with residents, hall opening and closing procedures, vandalism and common area damages.
- Responding to and managing emergency and crisis situations. Managing student alerts in the Academic Alert System.
- Residence Hall Leader and Resource Agent (20%)
- Provide the overall direction and guidance for the residence
hall. This is accomplished by:
- Being available to residents and staff.
- Spending time being “out and about” and getting to know residents and them getting to know you.
- Working with problems, issues and concerns that arise with individual residents as well as the community as a whole.
- Participating in hall happenings and programs.
- Working to help build community through being involved, supporting, and encouraging, knowing others and being known. Collaborate with staff in building community.
- Have a working knowledge of Division of Student Affairs and Enrollment Management offices and offerings, including academic resources, and overall familiarity with SDSU .
- Provide the overall direction and guidance for the residence
hall. This is accomplished by:
- Hall Government Advisor (10%)
- Actively advise and guide student leaders involved with the individual residence Hall Government. This is accomplished through:
- Individual and group development. Meeting attendance and participation (general hall meetings, executive board meetings, one-on-one meetings with executive board members).
- Oversight of hall programming and hall government budget for the hall.
- Knowing and interpreting the hall constitution.
- Understanding and using student development theory with assisting student leaders in areas of personal, academic, and leadership growth.
- Effective communication
- Student Conduct Hearing Officer (10%)
- Meet with residents that are allegedly in violation of policy, procedure, or Student Code to learn and educate; help the resident to understand their rights and responsibilities; assist the resident to understand policy/procedure, and Student Code; establish guidelines for future actions; help residents to take responsibility for their own actions and decisions; help the resident to understand impact on the community. This is accomplished through:
- Knowledge and understanding of Department and SDSU policy, procedure, and Student Code. Administrative duties: including letters and procedure associated with due process and student conduct forms utilized.
- Departmental and Divisional Support (10%)
- Participate in campus wide on-call rotation with other RHD staff.
- Participate in collateral opportunities within the department. These include but are not limited to: student staff selection, student staff training, professional staff training, departmental operations, University Food Service Advisory Council,, assist with advising RHA, and more.
- Work with fellow colleagues in the division – meet regularly and help sponsor weekend programs.
- Summer responsibilities to include: Staff can expect to work in a variety of areas including camps and conferences, training, occupancy, assessment, facilities, and outreach in ways that support the Housing and Residential Life organization.
- Professional Development Involvement (5%)
- Engage in activities that further develop the individual as a person and professional. This includes but is not limited to graduate coursework, conference participation, committee involvement with professional organizations, reading books/publications in the field or for personal growth, and more. Identify areas of interest and growth. Establish a plan to pursue learning and development in the areas identified. Follow through with the plan created.

The Residence Hall Director position is a live-in position that includes professional development money and other benefits. We offer a generous retirement plan that includes 6% matching, 10 hours of annual leave each month, 9.34 hours of sick leave each month, and 11 paid holidays. Relocation benefits are available per university’s guidelines. Employees also have access to internal and state-sponsored training as well as reduced tuition for state-supported courses at all State of South Dakota academic institutions.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS :
- An earned Bachelor’s degree by start date;
- At least one year of Housing & Residence Life or Student Affairs experience;
- Effective written and verbal communication skills; and
- Must be authorized to work in the U.S. Sponsorship is not available for this position.
- Graduate school degree in Student Personnel Administration, Guidance and Counseling, Higher Education, Student Affairs, or related field.
- Relevant experiences such as: student conduct experience, crisis/emergency experience, student leadership or advising experience, programming experience,
- Strong leadership skills;
- Experience in community building in a college or university residential setting;
- Ability to motivate staff members and problem solve within a student-centered developmental model.
