Job Summary

Facilities Management at CU Boulder encourages applications for an Electronics Specialist II! This work unit is responsible for the installation, repair, maintenance, modification and operation of the Campus’ heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) systems and building automation systems (BAS) in academic, administrative and research buildings. This position will provide analysis, troubleshooting, repair, maintenance, installation and overall field operation of the Universities’ building automation system (BAS) end components/devices and HVAC systems.

This position also provides analysis, repair, installation and operational management of the HVAC and BAS systems within the Universities' buildings, using a high degree of customer communication and coordination to ensure departmental critical missions continue unimpeded. The position should understand all operational and control sequences, be able to follow all trouble shooting sequences, and read all related drawings and specifications.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

BAS Hardware, Software, and Calibration/Commissioning
  • Install, troubleshoot, repair and replace all field devices for control systems including microprocessor-based controllers, relays, work stations, communication and low voltage wiring.
  • Use the BAS to analyze/troubleshoot mechanical system faults/alarms and develop trends for buildings or sub-systems. Maintain and work with all versions of Microsoft Windows Office Suite, Andover control software Continuum, Ecostruxure Building Operation, Automated Logic, and be familiar with firmware protocols such as ModBus, BACNet, LONWorks, Etc.
  • Commission, calibrate, and test all control instrumentation components within a building control system to maintain optimal system performance and energy savings.
HVAC System Analysis and Repair
  • Have a journey level understanding of HVAC Systems and associated equipment. Perform journey level installation, analysis and repair of HVAC Systems and associated equipment. Repairs and required troubleshooting are identified by the BAS generated alarms and customer generated service calls. Systems include air handling units, variable air volume (VAV) systems, VAV with reheats, dual duct systems, constant volume with reheats, labs with variable fume hood control, constant and variable flow heating and chilled water systems, Delta P valves, steam systems, chillers, constant temperature rooms, computer room air conditioning systems, direct expansion refrigeration systems, flat plate and shell/tube heat exchangers, cooling towers, boilers (steam and hot water), and process cooling chilled water systems.
Project Support
  • Responsible for providing support for projects which may include small remodel projects, renewal and replacement projects, large capital projects and other similar projects. This may include reviewing project documents (drawings, specifications, component submittals and requests for information) reviewing outage notification requests, performing outages related to projects, performing quality assurance inspections, attending project walks, performing equipment start up and final commissioning of new project. These inspections are not code-based inspections however; certain aspects of codes could be referenced during the inspection.
Paperwork, Scheduling, and Other Duties
  • Record labor immediately after performing specific work tasks and prior to beginning labor on a different work order, and detail tasks completed and update work order status to reflect real time updates for customer. When closing work orders, include closing comments and ensure repair work orders are created. Ensure field assets are labeled with the accurate asset management tag. When updates are required, communicate with the Work Management Team. Complete material issues requests and purchase request to procure material needed. Actively participate in safety meetings and follow all safety policies, procedures and guidelines, while adhering to Standard Operating Procedures for assignments and use of equipment. Participate in and complete all safety trainings. Report potential safety hazards, mistakes, accidents and/or procedural violations in a timely manner. As an essential services employee, respond to other duties as assigned on an as needed basis.

  • This full time, in-person positions work schedule is Monday - Friday from 7:30 am - 4:30 pm. May be required to work weekends, alternate or extended shifts at the discretion of the work unit supervisor or may be changed based on the department needs.
What We Can Offer
  • The annual salary rate for this role is $81,975.
  • If you have prior state-classified experience in the same class series as this position, your pay may be set at a higher amount per the state Step Pay Program implemented on July 1, 2024.

What We Require
  • Must be a Colorado resident and have a valid Colorado driver's license to apply.
  • Two years of experience in an occupational field related to the work assigned to the position. Appropriate education will substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.
