Job Summary

The Department of Public Safety at CU Boulder is accepting applications for a Director of Community Safety ! This position will support the mission of the Division of Public Safety to foster and maintain a safe and secure environment for its students, faculty, staff and visitors, by maintaining a level of protection to principal working and visiting CU Boulder properties. Supervise Protective Services Officers and Contract Security personnel during details as needed.

The Director of Community Safety will provide security and escort for principal(s) as needed during normal work hours and after hour travel outside of state as needed, as well as movement updates when with the principal(s) to leadership for situational awareness. This role will also have supervision and oversight of buildings access control measures to ensure safe arrival and departure of the principal(s) and prevent access by unauthorized or suspicious persons or identify other unsafe conditions or other irregularities. Investigate suspicious activities and unusual incidents during assigned tours as they relate to specific events.

The successful incumbent in this position will be a thoughtful and strategic leader, skilled at building relationships and engaging in collaboration with departmental leaders within and outside the Division of Public Safety to understand business needs and identify solutions to those needs. They will consider how to incorporate safety and security innovation in the areas of protective services. They will be able to develop and enforce the multidisciplinary policies and standards necessary to ensure integrity, security and standardization within protective services.

This position will analyze data regarding security activities to determine patterns or trend that may affect the safety of the principal and determine need for course correction. They will also prepare and test emergency response plans for key locations such as typical event locations, residences (as applicable), and primary office locations used by the principal. In addition, this role will conduct building security reviews and adversarial analysis on key locations and buildings as directed by supervisors, and emergency reviews and walk throughs of non-CU Boulder buildings where the principal is scheduled to be present.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

Strategic Community Services Leadership and Planning

Works collaboratively with the AVC for Security Services, and Division of Public Safety departmental leadership to:
  • Determine current divisional protective services needs/gaps and find opportunities to implement innovative solutions
  • Develop a 5-year strategic plan for Protective Services, including a projected budget that aligns both with the Public Safety priorities and the strategic imperatives and budget of the CU Boulder campus
  • Prioritize initiatives to complete and execute upon the strategic plan,
  • Evaluate progress and adjust plan as needed
  • Develop policies, standards and procedures for protective services that ensures integrity, security and standardization for protective services, and
  • Maintain awareness of protective services industry innovations and potential to integrate innovations into divisional plans.
  • Work closely with the Assistant Vice Chancellor for Security Services to manage the protective services budget.
Supervision and Mentorship
  • Provide supervision, performance management, support and professional development opportunities for team members.
  • Align staff duties with changing division needs and collaborate with divisional departments to ensure that staff resources in this area support departmental needs.
  • Develop work schedules to ensure adequate security coverage during normal operations and special event activities covering shifts of twenty-four hours per day.
  • Participate in supervisory staff meetings, pre-event briefings and meetings, and recommend policy changes and program development to superiors.
  • Perform access control; maintain unit duty logs, daily reports, incident reports and all required paperwork.
  • Supervise security officers, security specialists and contract security personnel during specific on campus events.
Campus and Community Partnership
  • Engage in open and collaborative discussion with the Office of the Chancellor and the Department of Athletics.
  • Work with campus partners to identify, where possible, protective services can improve use of university resources.
  • This position will be responsible for coordinating with federal, state and local law enforcement agencies who are escorting VIPS and dignitaries on CU Boulder properties. Perform safety and equipment inspections.

What We Can Offer

The annual salary range for this position is $110,900 - $130,000.

What We Require
  • Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, business, or related field. A combination of education and relevant experience may substitute for the degree on a year-for-year basis.
  • Six years of experience that includes:
    • Progressively increasing responsibilities in the areas of public safety and protective services.
    • Supervising professional staff.

  • Ability to elicit business requirements for the public safety division and formulate solutions that meet business needs.
  • Ability to advise, empower, develop and evaluate staff.
  • Ability to engage in budget planning and justification, as well as budget reconciliation.
  • Willingness to build awareness of and follow campus policies and standards around hardware and software compliance, pricing and purchasing, and security standard processes.
What We Would Like You to Have
  • Master's degree in criminal justice, business, or related field.
  • At least seven years of experience with progressively increasing responsibilities in the areas of public safety.
  • Knowledge of national and regional landscape for public safety.
  • Previous experience in protective services.
  • Engagement with organizations related to public safety.
  • Proven success in delivering innovative protective services solutions and cost saving strategies.
