Position Announcement

The Director of Marketing and Communications for the School of the Arts (SOA) is central to building a cohesive and compelling brand for the SOA that resonates with diverse audiences. Positioned within the University's central Marketing and Communications office, this embedded role operates like an in-house agency for the SOA, connecting the school's programs, such as the academic units, Noorda Center, and Museum of Art, with the broader community.

With a balance of strategic insight and creative leadership, the Director drives the development and execution of multi-channel marketing plans that elevate the SOA's profile. This role not only ensures alignment with the University's overall branding and initiatives but also empowers the SOA's own vision, enhancing its distinct presence across digital platforms, traditional media, and special events. By guiding a skilled team of marketing professionals, the Director fosters a culture of efficiency, creativity, and collaboration, helping the team stay ahead in a fast-evolving marketing landscape.

Through a mix of data-driven analysis and monthly reporting, the Director provides transparency and alignment, ensuring that marketing activities directly support the priorities of both the SOA and the University. Each year, the Director synthesizes these insights into comprehensive marketing plans that underscore the impact of SOA's work, securing buy-in from executive leadership and setting the stage for a year of strategic engagement and growth. This role offers a rare opportunity for a marketing leader to shape a dynamic arts brand, creating deep connections between the School of the Arts and the audiences who will thrive from its programs and initiatives.

Summary of Responsibilities


  • Develop and execute marketing programs to promote the SOA brand and the programs under the SOA umbrella, including the academic units, the Noorda Center, and the Museum of Art. Perform lead generation. Attend key events. Create, manage, and measure programs to fulfill initiative success metrics. Create, review and present annual marketing plans to align with SOA brand strategy, University objectives, and achieve annual operating plan goals. Leverage customer insight data to drive efficiency. Develop and implement media planning, buying, and innovation strategies.
  • Lead, inspire, and nurture team members in MarCom best practices and connect them with available tools and resources. Provide direction to multi-disciplinary teams for collateral, web, video assets, and other visual communications media. Identify media outlets for press releases and promotions. Enforce brand marketing guidelines in trademarks, logos, and publications. Develop workflow and accountability structure for stakeholders. Create and enhance stakeholder and partner relationships.
  • Responsible for monitoring, administering, and analyzing budget and resources for the highest return on investment.
  • Responsible for identifying, assigning, implementing, and distributing impactful student, staff, and alumni stories internally and externally. This individual will be designated as the representative for the School of the Arts and responsible for Identifying media outlets for press releases and promotions in coordination with central marcom in all public relations and media relations matters.

Qualifications / Licenses / Certifications

Graduation from an accredited institution with a bachelor's degree in a related discipline plus three years of staff level experience or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience related to the Summary of Duties totaling seven years.

Preferred Qualifications
Graduation from an accredited institution with a master's degree in a related discipline plus five years of staff level experience or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience related to the Summary of Duties totaling ten years. Experience in higher education marketing, agency, or marketing for arts programming preferred but not required.

  • Knowledge of the fundamentals of marketing (direct marketing, advertising, promotion)
  • Knowledge of digital marketing and measurement strategies and principles
  • Knowledge of budget and accounting principles
  • Knowledge of marketing operations and project management
  • Knowledge of PR, media relations and communication strategies
  • Knowledge of media buying, media monitoring, media mix and managing marketing spend
