The University of Montana Western invites applications for a tenure-track position in the Department of History, Philosophy, and Social Sciences at the rank of Assistant Prof essor, commencing August 1, 20 2 5 . Applicants should have a specialization within the broader content field of Political Philosophy, regardless of which discipline or program conferred their degree . Applicants must show evidence of the ability and commitment to integrate popular culture media into the ir courses, many of which are part of the Popular Culture Studies minor. The successful applicant will serve as Assistant Director of Interdisciplinary Studies, working with the Director to manage the Interdisciplinary Studies major and its constituent minors. Other duties include student advising, scholarly activity, participation in campus committees, assisting with student recruitment, attending faculty meetings, and other normal faculty duties.

Qualifications

Required qualifications
  • Doctorate in p olitical p hilosophy (whether from a philosophy or a politics program)
  • Demonstrated excellence in postsecondary teaching
  • Ability to t each introductory courses in p hilosophy ( both logic and rhetoric), political ethics, and political philosophy
  • Ability to teach introductory courses in government
  • Ability to t each introductory courses and upper-level courses in the applicant’s areas of specialization
  • Ability to t each upper-level courses in law ( American Constitutional Law, Comparative Legal Systems, and/or International Law )
  • Integrat ion of popular culture media studies into m any of these courses
  • Ability to s erve as Assistant Director of Interdisciplinary Studies
Preferred qualifications
  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching the subjects listed ( highly preferred )
  • Ability to t each Classics courses ( highly preferred )
  • Ability to t each courses in other areas within the Division of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences (18 graduate credits in an outside area, highly preferred )
  • Experience in online course delivery

The successful candidate will also be expected to demonstrate professionalism, good citizenship, the ability to maintain scholarly productivity in the area of specialty, and a commitment to professional service including guiding undergraduate research, assessment efforts, committee work, advising, and other departmental or university duties as assigned. Rank and salary are negotiable dependent upon credentials and experience and are based on the faculty collective bargaining agreement which can be found here.

Start Date:  August 1, 2025

Salary:  Up to $54,000 for Assistant Professor as per the CBA . Union Affiliation: MFPE

Contract:  10-month

The University of Montana Western is a dynamic, innovative, undergraduate university with over 7 0 full-time faculty and more than 1, 2 0 0 students. Montana Western is the only public four-year college in the nation offering  Experience One (X1),  experiential learning delivered on the block schedule. Class sizes are small, and students take a single course at a time, three hours each day for 18 days, before moving on to the next course. Each course is four credits and four blocks are offered each semester. The block schedule facilitates field and lab work, undergraduate research, study travel, and interdisciplinary teaching.
