The Department of Communication, Journalism and Film at The College of New Jersey ( TCNJ) invites applications for a 10-month, non-tenure track Clinical Specialist position to teach undergraduate courses in Digital Journalism beginning August 2025. The position is offered for an initial two-year appointment, with potential for renewal for a second two-year appointment and subsequent three-year appointments based on performance. The position carries a 4-3 teaching load with advising responsibilities.

Position Summary:

We seek candidates in the field of Digital Journalism with sufficient academic qualifications and professional experience publishing high-quality journalism or non-fiction storytelling or digital communication in a range of venues and formats. This experience can include multi-platform production; investigative reporting; visual journalism; data journalism; immersive storytelling; broadcast; social justice journalism; public relations; and/or strategic communication. The ideal candidate will be able to teach courses in an undergraduate Journalism program that complement existing strengths in the department and will be committed to contributing to a diverse and inclusive academic community. Courses could include Data Journalism, Data Visualization, News Editing and Production, Podcasting, Strategic Communication, Writing for User Experience, Social Media Strategy, Immersive Media, Immersive Storytelling, Media Entrepreneurship and Broadcast Journalism.

The candidate must demonstrate experience with the Adobe Creative Suite and expertise in immersive media (virtual, augmented, and extended realities) is a plus. The successful candidate will be expected to teach 7 classes a year (4/3 load) with no research expectation and provide service to the department by advising. (TCNJ’s standard teaching load is 4/4 but this position will have reassigned time for advising for the first two-year contract. The reassigned time for advising will be reassessed with each official renewal).

Qualifications:

Applicants should:
  • Have a minimum of a completed Master’s degree in Journalism or a closely-related field.
  • Demonstrate cultural competency and ability to foster inclusive learning environments and mutual respect for students and colleagues.
  • Professional Industry experience in Journalism, Non-fiction storytelling or Digital communication
Preferred Qualifications:
  • At least 3 years of experience teaching undergraduate Journalism or related courses as the instructor of record.

The program is situated in a department that includes specializations in film, social and mass media, and emerging communication technologies where there are opportunities for interdisciplinary teaching and collaboration. There is potential for cross-school collaborations with the Interactive Multimedia program.
