Job Description

The University of Missouri School of Music invites applications for a Visiting Assistant Professor of Music-Viola and member of the Esterhazy String Quartet. This is a full-time, nine-month, non-tenure track appointment, to start in August 2025. We seek an individual to join our string faculty and continue to build and maintain a successful viola studio. The successful candidate will teach and recruit undergraduate and graduate viola students, conduct a weekly studio class, maintain an active profile as a performing artist including as violist with the Esterhazy String Quartet, and coach chamber ensembles. The ideal candidate will serve as Director of the Missouri String Project, teach related string pedagogy courses, and possess expertise in chamber music, string repertoire, and/or aural skills. Moreover, they will participate in string area activities and provide service to the School and the University, in keeping with expectations for visiting assistant professors. Candidate’s with a DMA or equivalent professional experience are highly encouraged to apply.

The Esterhazy String Quartet, the University of Missouri’s faculty quartet-in-residence, has maintained a national and international performance schedule for over fifty years, and it continues to demonstrate a strong commitment to new quartet literature through regular commissioning and recording projects.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications: MM in Viola by time of appointment.

Candidates will be evaluated on:
  • Professional experience and accomplishment as a violist in solo, chamber, and orchestral settings.
  • Education and/or equivalent professional experience.
  • Evidence of successful teaching at the university level.
