Job Details

DePauw University is an Equal Employment Opportunity Employer: Women, members of underrepresented groups, and persons with disabilities are encouraged to apply. Position will remain open until filled.

The Department of Art and Art History at DePauw University invites applications for a tenure-track position in Design Studies at the rank of Assistant Professor beginning August 2025. Applicants with an MFA in Graphic Design, Studio Art, Master of Design (MDes), Master of Art and Design (MAD), or related fields are encouraged to apply (completed by August 2025). Teaching assignment is five courses per year instructing all levels of design curriculum. Alongside teaching, duties include the development and management of the design studio, curriculum development, continued engagement in professional and research activities, and active participation in departmental and university-wide service. The new faculty member will have access to a private studio, faculty development funding, presentation opportunities, and employment benefits.

We seek applications from candidates with the ability and interest to shape the direction of DePauw’s new Design Studies major and whose pedagogy will support the department’s existing studio art, art history, and museum studies programs. As the first new major launched in tandem with The Creative School , Design Studies incorporates allied courses from across campus to ensure students encounter visual culture and design principles from a variety of disciplinary perspectives.

In addition to preparing students for various graduate school and professional opportunities in design fields, the ideal candidate will have expertise in emerging design technologies and the cultural, social, and ethical consequences of those technologies. A commitment to teaching undergraduates in a liberal-arts setting and evidence of effective and inclusive teaching are essential.
