The Chief Development Officer is part of the University’s leadership team and reports directly to the President. The incumbent will lead the development department in managing, coordinating, and achieving organizational fundraising goals. This position is responsible for developing and implementing a comprehensive capital campaign and an annual development plan that includes major gifts, corporate and foundation partnerships, annual giving, program and event sponsorships, and more. This position provides strategic direction and guidance and mentorship to direct reports from the Office of Development and Office of Alumni Affairs and Parental Relations.

Job Duties:

· Develop and implement a multi-faceted fund development plan that maximizes philanthropic support from individuals, foundations, and corporations to include Planned Giving.

· Develop and align advancement efforts to accomplish Priority 4 in the University’s 2023-2033 Strategic Plan.

· Secure donations via leadership and major gifts, robust year-end strategy, annual fund appeals and campaigns, events, foundation and corporate grants, online giving, and sponsorships.

· Identify, cultivate, solicit and steward restricted and unrestricted major gifts, working with key leadership, committee members, and donor advocates as appropriate.

· Maintain an active portfolio of prospects and monitor progress using moves management.

· Ensure the timely approval and submission of grant funding proposals to private and public funders.

· Develop, write, and submit grant proposals and reports for major funders.

· Develop campaign strategies and set campaign sub-goals for ambitious campaigns to fund capital projects.

· Work with the communications team to produce all capital campaign packets for prospect and donor visits with follow-up correspondence.

· Develop and implement a comprehensive annual plan for the department, including but not limited to, events, annual giving, corporate and foundation partnerships, major gifts, and more.

· Track all funding metrics on a regular basis to ensure goals met and/or adjusted as needed

· Oversee the Development team and work with each team member to identify goals and benchmarks for success, guide and advise priorities and projects, and ensure targets are hit and/or adjusted as needed.

· Oversees the Alumni Affairs and Parental Relations team and works closely with the National Hampton Alumni Association, Inc. (NHAA) to maximize alumni engagement and fundraising initiatives.

· Review monthly financials and support annual audit as needed.

· Special projects as needed.

· Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

· Bachelor’s degree from a four-year accredited institution; Master’s degree preferred

· Seven or more years of experience in fundraising, higher education or not-for-profit organizations, with proven success in major gift and planned gift solicitation

· Demonstrated high level strategic thinking and planning in a fund-raising organization — Track record of success in leading fundraising campaigns and programs

· Success in establishing relationships with individuals and organizations of influence including funders, partner agencies and volunteers

· Ability to convey the University’s strategic future, mission and priorities to the University community and stakeholders

· Strong written and verbal communications skills; strong public speaking ability

· Demonstrated ability to motivate, collaborate with, and drive strategic alignment among staff, faculty, students, Board of Trustees, alumni members and related organizations

· Solid organizational abilities, including planning, delegating, program development and task facilitation —

· Ability to engage and socialize with external constituents and prospective donors

· Experience and skill in working with a Board of Trustees
