Job Summary
The Muslim Chaplain serves as an essential function at the Morgan State University Memorial Chapel having the responsibility for providing spiritual and philosophical leadership, organization, and advising for their faith community as well as guidance on religious observance. The Muslim Chaplain supports the Muslim Student Clubs in collaboration with the University Memorial Chapel and Office of Student Life and Development. Additionally, they will provide outreach and support for Muslim students across all MSU programs, working with campus partners including (but not limited to) Division of Student Affairs, Dining Services, Division of Academic Affairs, Division of International Affairs, and Study Abroad. The Muslim Chaplain will provide ongoing assessments of Muslim life on campus, including regular program evaluations and annual reports. They will also continue to build a Muslim alumni network related to fundraising and community-building with an intention of supporting the mission of the Division of Student Affairs and Morgan State University.
Job Duties
Supports students, faculty, and staff to assess the specific needs and preferences, then develops and implements programming and initiatives to enhance spiritual and cultural support. Provide guidance on Muslim customs and practices to campus stakeholders as needed. Develops, organizes, and facilitates community-building programs and events that enhance the Muslim community’s spiritual, intellectual, and cultural life. Liaise with campus partners to serve the needs and goals of the Muslim campus community.
Coordinate Islamic religious services (e.g. Jummah prayers, Ramadan events) and interfaith and multifaith programs on campus. Foster and nurture a safe, welcoming environment for individuals from all sects and ethnic backgrounds within the Islamic faith.
Maintain regular office hours to meet with students and collaborate with University Memorial Chapel staff. Collaborate with mosques, institutions of learning, and spirituality partners in the Maryland area to collaborate and foster community.
Establishes an inclusive space and provides confidential one-on-one spiritual direction, referring students to on-campus resources and services as needed.
In conjunction with University Memorial Chapel staff, collaborate, plan, and implement interfaith prayer services and events that respond to the needs of the MSU community. Engage with leaders from different religious backgrounds to organize events, panels, and discussions that foster a multicultural and multi-faith understanding.
Perform all duties as assigned.
Requested Minimum Qualifications
Education
A Bachelor’s Degree in Islamic Studies, Religious Studies, or a related field from an accredited college or university is required.

Education

Experience
- At least five years of experience in chaplaincy, or community religious leadership is required.
- A Strong understanding and respect for diversity within the Islamic faith and commitment to interfaith dialogue and cooperation is also required.
- Appreciation of and sensitivity to diverse cultures and lifestyles and ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing with diverse populations
- Excellent interpersonal, communication, and public speaking skills
- Crisis intervention and conflict resolution skills
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Requires a high level of communication, diplomacy, and interpersonal skills.
- Advanced computer literacy and software skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively with students, staff, faculty, and external stakeholders.
- Ability to effectively support the Chapel with programming and initiatives for the campus community.
- Ability to establish, adapt, and accomplish goals and objectives for the Chapel, in alignment with the University’s Strategic Plan.
- Cultural competency and inclusivity, working well with staff of diverse cultural, ethnic/racial backgrounds, gender identities, and sexual orientations.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, and Google Suite, and demonstrated technical skills sufficient to comprehensively use and oversee the maintenance of a complex and secure database.
