Description
The School of Psychological and Behavioral Sciences (SPBS) at Southern Illinois University Carbondale announces an opening for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in the Brain and Cognitive Sciences program with expertise in Behavioral Neuroscience. The Brain and Cognitive Sciences program provides training in the psychological sciences with core specializations in Lifespan Development, Learning and Cognition, and Neuroscience. The anticipated starting date for all positions is August 16, 2025.
Examples of Duties
The selected candidate will be expected to establish an active research program that engages undergraduate and graduate students, and to seek extramural funding. The candidate will also mentor students enrolled in the Brain and Cognitive Science doctoral program. The position requires teaching a range of undergraduate and graduate courses. Possible courses include Introduction to Neuroscience; Neuroanatomy, Psychopharmacology, Recovery of Function, Computational Modeling, and special topics courses within the candidate's area of expertise.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications: We seek a candidate with a Ph.D. in Neuroscience, Psychology, or related discipline and an established record or promise of scholarly productivity are required. Applicants must have a strong background in behavioral neuroscience utilizing small animal models that principally focus on behavior. ABD applicants will be considered if all requirements for the Ph.D. will be completed by August 15, 2025. If all requirements for the PhD have not been completed, a one-year term appointment may be offered in accordance with university policy.
Preferred Qualifications: Preference will be given to individuals with postdoctoral training and an established history of securing external research funding. Candidates whose research and teaching interests span two or more of the core specializations of the Brain and Cognitive Sciences program are especially desirable. Area of specialization is open, but especially desirable areas of scholarly interest include the neuroscience of learning and memory, recovery of function following injury, behavioral pharmacology and/or toxicology, neurobiological development, and neurodegenerative models, as these complement existing research areas within the Brain and Cognitive Sciences program and the School of Psychological and Behavioral Sciences.
