Teaching Professors (Assistant, Associate, and Full) at Illinois are considered specialized faculty. Approximately 30% of faculty in the School of Music are specialized. New hires in these roles start with a one-year contract that becomes renewable after the first year, up to a maximum of five years at a time. Contract renewal is based on the quality and effectiveness of one’s work, as determined by (e.g.) course evaluations and internal peer review. After three years, specialized faculty may receive subsequent multi-year contracts per the discretion of the hiring unit. Specialized faculty at UIUC are represented by a union, the Non-Tenure Faculty Coalition (NTFC) Local #6546, that negotiates salaries and benefits. More information about this type of faculty position can be found in University Communications #25 and #26 here: https://provost.illinois.edu/policies/provosts-communications/
