Job Description
The Department of Architecture within the College of Engineering, Technology and Architecture (CETA) at the University of Hartford seeks a full-time, non-tenure-track, Clinical Applied Faculty Member at the rank of Assistant Professor to serve as Program Director for the Graduate M.Arch Program with the responsibility to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in Architecture, focusing on Professional Practice.
Responsibilities
The Master of Architecture program emphasizes an integration of design principles, engineering fundamentals, sustainable and resilient strategies, and business understanding with the constant exploration of innovative building and urban design. The Graduate Program Director reports to the Chair of the Department of Architecture and is expected to provide aspiring and inspirational leadership in advancing the M.Arch. program. The Director’s duties include developing a strategic direction for the graduate curriculum, creating a dynamic student learning experience, supervising national accreditation procedures, managing the AXP Opportunities Program; and strategizing and participating in recruitment, marketing, and promotion activities.
Consideration may be given to candidates that demonstrate the following:
Evidence of leadership, strategy, and vision for the department, in collaboration with faculty, staff, students, and other college and university administrators. A record of excellence and innovation, such as significant contributions to research, teaching, scholarship, design/creative work, and/or professional practice in the field of architecture. Excellence as an administrator; with a strong record of administrative experience, including effective communication, supervision, program management, collaboration, or team building; A dedication to curriculum development, with the ability to supervise, develop and deliver a curriculum and teaching that promotes a comprehensive holistic approach to design that integrates Design, Theory, Technology, and Practice; Knowledge and experience with university and professional standards, including effective assessments that meet all professional accrediting agencies (NAAB); Knowledge and expertise in the profession and/or academy, and the ability to mentor and advise students, fostering their professional growth.
A component of the candidate’s teaching responsibilities will include undergraduate and graduate architecture courses focusing on Professional Practice. Candidates will be expected to remain active in the profession and have knowledge of professional practice contexts, including professional license or certification, AIA contract documents, cost estimating, and practice management. Candidates should show a willingness and ability to employ state-of-the-art simulation software and technology in their coursework.
Furthermore, a critical understanding of practice related issues of equity and inclusion is a priority. All faculty should have the capacity to support and enhance diverse learning and/or working environments.
Significant opportunities exist for research collaboration with faculty members within the Department of Architecture, CETA, and across the University, as well as industrial partners. The University, College (CETA), and Department of Architecture are committed to nurturing the career development of faculty. Candidates will be expected to remain active in professional practice and contribute to the profession through publications, presentations, or other publicly disseminated work. Clinical/applied faculty are expected to engage in professional productivity such as consulting, as well as to actively participate in departmental and school committees, advise students, and contribute to student recruitment and retention.
The initial Clinical/Applied contract is 1-2 years and subsequent longer-term contracts are based on review of performance and the continuing need for the position. With satisfactory reviews, the next appointment is for three years. Following a satisfactory review, a 5-year contract is offered with additional 5-year contracts offered subsequently. Clinical/Applied faculty can submit for promotion to Associate Professor and then to full Professor. The teaching requirement is 24 credits per academic year, which may include summer, if desired. However, the teaching load is reduced by 3 credits for serving as the Graduate Program Director. The specific expectations, assignments, and responsibilities for the position are defined in the final letter of appointment.
Qualifications
Required
A master’s in architecture (M.Arch.) OR a professional degree in architecture (B.Arch., or comparable professional degree) and a graduate degree in architecture, or allied field. Evidence of authorship and innovation in practice. Applicant has demonstrated teaching ability in architecture professional practice. Applicant has taught integrated Design, Construction, or Technology courses. Applicant demonstrates professional productivity. Applicant has leadership or administrative experience and could guide curriculum development or revision. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are essential to the position. Preferred
Applicant has taught and/or developed courses in Social Justice or Underserved Populations Issues in Architecture, sustainable design + technology, structures, or related fields. Applicant has taught and advised students from BIPOC or LGBTQIA+ populations. Applicant’s research, scholarship or professional projects demonstrate engagement in social justice, equity and/or diversity issues. Professional registration (RA, PE, CACB). Post-professional degree in architecture or an allied discipline. Advanced academic qualifications in discipline (Ph.D, ABD, path to Ph.D.) Applicant demonstrates previous experience in NAAB Accreditation Procedures. Applicant has taught undergraduate and graduate students in the discipline. Applicant has the academic or professional experience needed to be effective at both the undergraduate and graduate level, specifically related to NAAB requirements focusing on integrated design. The College of Engineering, Technology, and Architecture offers undergraduate Engineering programs in Electrical, Computer, Acoustical and Music, Biomedical, Civil, Mechanical, Aerospace, and Robotics. It also offers undergraduate Engineering Technology programs in Audio, Computer and Electronic, Electromechanical, as well as Architectural Design + Technology.
