Job Details
The Department of Philosophy & Religious Studies at Old Dominion University invites applicants for an Assistant Professor with an AOS in Global Ethics & Technology to begin in Fall 2025. This is a 10-month, annual tenure track appointment. We seek a global ethicist to support the Department of Philosophy & Religious Studies's key role in interdisciplinary studies in Data Science, Leadership, Game Studies & Design, and Cybersecurity at ODU. We are specifically seeking a global ethicist who engages with research that addresses contemporary issues in global ethics and technology, especially AI.
Global ethics should include training in ethical traditions outside of the “canonical” Western traditions, including, but not limited to, African/Africana ethics, East Asian or South Asian ethics, Indigenous/First People’s ethics, or Latin American ethics. Concerned with topics in fairness, such as mitigating bias, global ethicists are able to teach and research on how to apply strategies to ensure the ethical fairness of design and application of AI, and to mitigate misinformation and disinformation. The AOC should include one or more of the following: AI ethics, cybersecurity ethics, ethics of technology, bioethics, environmental ethics, contemporary ethical theory, or philosophy of science.
The teaching load for this position is 3/3. This Assistant Professor will generally teach two general education classes offered within the Department and one class in their AOS (such as AI Ethics, Cybersecurity Ethics, Data Ethics, Philosophy of Technology, etc.) per semester.
ODU has a strong and active commitment to diversity. The Department of Philosophy & Religious Studies especially encourages applications from members of underrepresented groups and those with a demonstrated track record of promoting and enhancing a diverse and inclusive environment.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Ph.D. in Philosophy or Religious Studies or a related discipline by July 25, 2024.
- Compelling evidence of successful teaching in philosophy.
- A developing research agenda in global ethics and technology.
- An active record of publishing, demonstrated by publications in well-respected, peer-reviewed journals, in edited monographs, or in singly authored or co-authored books, amongst other media, based on the level of the candidate’s experience.
- Demonstrated commitment to undergraduate education and inclusive pedagogy.
- A developing research agenda in global ethics and technology.
- A record of publishing in relevant fields based on level of experience.
Preferred Qualifications: Experience with interdisciplinary studies and experience with grant-funding and/or undergraduate research are preferred.
How to Apply: Interested candidates should apply via https://jobs.odu.edu/postings/21835 and attach the following:
- A cover letter detailing your research agenda and teaching experience as relevant to the position.
- A curriculum vitae.
- A research statement.
- A diversity statement.
- A teaching portfolio designed in whatever way best communicates the candidate’s excellence in teaching. This portfolio should include syllabi and student evaluations in the last two years, if available.
- Unofficial graduate transcripts.
- Contact information for 3 professional references. The search committee will request letters of recommendation for short-listed candidates.
Applications should be submitted by December 2, 2024, for full consideration. The position will remain open until filled.
