Position Details

Duties Performed in the Usual Course of the Job

The Department of Sociology at Sam Houston State University ( SHSU ) announces an opening for one nine-month tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor to begin Fall 2025.

We seek candidates with expertise and teaching interest in either sociological theory (both classical and contemporary) or research methods, and a research specialization in either the environment or health. The successful candidate will also consistently teach undergraduate courses that satisfy the university’s core curriculum requirements (i.e., Introduction to Sociology or Introduction to Ethnic Studies) in the fall/spring semesters as well as graduate courses, maintain an active research agenda, and provide service to the university and the discipline.

Educational Requirements for the Position

A PhD in Sociology or a closely-related discipline must be completed by the time of appointment.

Experience Required for the Position

Evidence of excellence (or the promise of excellence) in teaching effectiveness is required. Applicants must also have a research agenda leading to publications in refereed journals and the potential to acquire extramural funding.

Other Requirements for the Position

The department offers undergraduate courses both in-person and online and the Masters of Arts program is completely online. Accordingly, the successful candidate will be expected to teach both in-person and online course. Faculty typically teach a 3-3 course schedule.
