Position Function:
The School of Architecture at Mississippi State University invites applicants for a tenure-track appointment at the Assistant Professor or Associate Professor rank with expertise in history and theory. The anticipated start date is Fall 2025. Candidates with emphasis areas involving social and cultural frameworks, including issues that range from historic preservation to housing or health, are encouraged to apply. The successful candidate will help shape and teach the history course sequence and teach in the design studio, which provides avenues to investigate historical and social issues in architectural projects. As part of a college that includes departments of art, interior design, and building construction science, there are opportunities to collaborate with design historians to serve the minors, concentrations, and graduate certificates. The planned graduate program also holds potential for involvement in historical investigations at the graduate level.

Mississippi has a history that provides a rich setting for examining social, cultural, economic, and political studies and their effect on the development of the built environment. As the only accredited program in the state, the School of Architecture takes a leading role in regional discussions and studies of this context. New faculty are provided start-up packages to support research, which may be used for travel, undergraduate research assistants, and other needs.

Department Profile:
The School of Architecture (housed in the College of Architecture, Art+ Design) is a 5-year Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch) degree granting program engaged in the issues of our time. We offer unique opportunities for innovative teaching, creative research, and substantive interdisciplinary collaboration; including the pioneering Collaborative Studios together with the Department of Building Construction Science. We pursue these commitments with a diverse faculty, all of whom teach both in the design studios and in the area of their specialization. We are deeply committed to the challenges of twenty-first century architecture; ecological and cultural sustainability, craft of making and building, collaborative practice and integrated project delivery, as well as creativity, criticality, and abstraction. All of these issues are intertwined in our research and teaching.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Successful candidate(s) will be expected to teach in various levels of architecture design studios and courses while productively engaging in peer-reviewed scholarly research and/or activities.
Successful candidates shall receive a recurring 9-month appointment throughout the tenure-track process. The typical faculty workload consists of teaching a combined total of eighteen credit-hours per academic year. This includes 2 six-credit hour studio classes and 2 three-credit hour lecture classes.
As a Carnegie Foundation R1-Very High Research Activity Doctoral University, Mississippi State is ranked among the National Science Foundation's top 100 research institutions. Successful candidates will pursue a research agenda that has the potential to create a national reputation. To support their research, successful candidates will receive a research start-up package.
Service to the institution, including committee assignments and/or public outreach activities, is also expected of successful candidates.
Minimum Qualifications:
Professional architectural degree and a master's degree in architecture or related field.
Level of appointment commensurate with qualifications and experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
Professional experience and licensure in architecture or an earned Ph.D. are desirable but not required of candidates. The School of Architecture encourages diverse theoretical and methodological perspectives. We invite candidates who can collaborate with our faculty who share diverse viewpoints. We are seeking a good colleague who can make a positive contribution to the missions of our school and college as well as the university.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Successful candidates will have qualifications to support design-studio teaching (in a NAAB accredited program) and have an established research agenda in history and/or theory.
