Johns Hopkins, founded in 1876, is America's first research university and home to nine world-class academic divisions working together as one university.
The Department of Medicine is seeking a Nurse Practitioner to provide comprehensive and episodic care for patients with gastrointestinal disorders in the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at Sibley Memorial Hospital, as well as the ambulatory locations of the GI practices. The Nurse Practitioner works collaboratively within a multidisciplinary health team to optimize team performance and patient outcomes and is responsible for providing comprehensive and age-appropriate care to both well and/or ill patients. The Nurse Practitioner educates patients and/or intervenes in acute or chronic illness, practices within the guidelines of the unit department, and acts in accordance with the Nurse Practitioner- Physician Written Agreement required and approved by their state of licensure.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities
Clinical Responsibilities
- Provides comprehensive and episodic care independently and in tandem with physicians to all new patients, follow-ups and consultations, as needed.
- Proposes and implements medical therapy and treatment plans for patients seen in the clinic, pertinent to both patients followed by collaborating physicians as well patients seen independent of an attending physician. This may include telemedicine.
- Requests and facilitates the scheduling of diagnostic tests and/or procedures as indicated by electronic notes/orders.
- Communicates the results of tests and arranges for any required follow up procedures/tests/investigations of the patients.
- Monitors patients while on therapy to evaluate them for side effects and expected outcomes.
- Adjusts and starts new medications as indicated by patient condition.
- Counsels and teaches patients and family members about the disease process and expected outcomes.
- Makes referrals to other specialists as indicated by the patient’s condition.
- Promptly enters clinic notes and other pertinent data into EPIC as this is integral to the proper care of the patient. Communicates with and provides information to referring physicians.
- Develops a synergistic relationship with both internal and external stakeholders to bolster referral volume. Builds and maintains relationships with regional primary care physician’s practices.
- Submits pre-authorization documentation and conducts peer to peer communication
- May be asked to manage EPIC InBasket requests for colleagues, physicians or a group.
- Participates in clinical trials as needed.
- Participates in Sibley “First Call.” First call is supported by the physician on-call for any higher-level patient issues. Call schedule is 5:00pm-07:00am on weekdays and 24-hours on weekends. Supplemental pay is provided for participation in call.
- Participates in rotation to staff daytime inpatient GI consult service at Sibley Memorial Hospital for unassigned GI patients and GI patients managed by our practice. APPs will be assigned inpatient responsibilities one week at a time and will not have outpatient clinics during inpatient weeks. APPs will be responsible for completing all consults requested by Sibley Hospitalists.
Customer Service and Teamwork Responsibilities
- Assists physicians with answering phone calls related to patient care. Answers phone calls independently related to patient care. Is courteous and pleasant in person and on the telephone with coworkers, patients, visitors, and supervisors. Utilizes proper telephone etiquette. Warmly greets patients and visitors. Verbally expresses appreciation when ending a conversation with a caller.
- Handles and resolves patient complaints non-defensively and without blame to other employees. Seeks to satisfy a dissatisfied customer.
- Is generous in assisting and supporting others.
Computer Knowledge Expectations
- Operates personal computer to access email, computerized scheduling and documentation databases, and other basic office support software.
- Successfully completes all necessary EPIC training courses and other applicable clinical software systems.
- Completes all required HIPAA and other specified online training courses.
- Other duties may be assigned by the employee’s immediate clinical supervisor, Assistant Administrator for the Division, physician leadership or a collaborating physician.

- Familiarity with regulations and standards governing NPs in the state of licensure.

Minimum Qualifications
- Master's Degree in Nursing; Registered Nurse license and Certified as a Nurse Practitioner. Must be licensed as NP in State of Maryland or other state where practicing.
- Additional experience may substitute for master's degree, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
- Current CPR certification.
- Must maintain current licensure and certification during duration of employment.
- Completion of the JHMI credentialing process is required prior to start date.
Preferred Qualifications
- Recent medical/surgical experience with GI practice.

Starting Salary Range: $100,000 - $152,900 ($130,000 targeted;
Commensurate with experience)

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
