Job Summary:

Wheelhouse Studios is looking for a Director to oversee our studio spaces and programs. Located in the lower level of the Memorial Union, Wheelhouse Studios serves as UW Madison's art studio. We are seeking a dynamic, creative individual to lead our team as Director. The person in this position will have the opportunity to shape exciting and engaging free and revenue generating art events that appeal to participants across a broad demographic. We offer a wide range of classes, workshops, events and provide drop-in studio space. We're looking for someone with the creative spark and vision to conceptualize, implement, and evaluate programming that will engage students and the greater community.

Responsibilities: Provides guidance for program planning, implementation, and evaluation, and/or supervises outreach staff. Monitors budget and appropriate funding for programming. Promotes stable and productive relationships between the university and community. Strives to expand and ensure access to programs, facilities, and educational services to diverse audiences.
  • 25% Supervises the implementation of outreach-program-focused strategic planning initiatives and objectives
  • 10% Develops and implements operating policies and procedures to promote the outreach program in alignment with the strategic plan
  • 10% Monitors the unit or program budget and approves program expenditures
  • 15% Reviews recommendations for and provides input on the design and development of new outreach programs or services
  • 10% Determines outreach program needs and the personnel resource allocation plan
  • 10% May exercise supervisory authority, including hiring, transferring, suspending, promoting, managing conduct and performance, discharging, assigning, rewarding, disciplining, and/or approving hours worked of at least 2.0 FTE or equivalent employees
  • 20% Serve as a member of the Community Engagement Team to develop and implement programming focused on revenue generation and engagement with the Wisconsin Union.
Tasks:
  • Develop and implement Wheelhouse creative course programming that appeals to students, the University Community, and the larger community.
  • Develop creative drop-in and retail environments for the studios to promote art and generate revenue.

Education:

Required, Bachelor's Degree in student affairs, arts administration, recreation management, art education, or related field

Preferred, Master's Degree in student affairs, arts administration, recreation management, art education, or a related field

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:
* 2 years of experience in a supervisory or management role.
* 1 year of arts related educational or outreach program development, planning and implementation. Please describe the program and your level of responsibility.
* Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and professionally, both verbally and in writing, with students, staff and a diverse public.

Preferred Qualifications:
* Experience in one or more of the following principal art media - photography/digital imagery, ceramics, art metals, fabric arts, painting and drawing.

Work Type:

Full Time: 100%

This position will require most work to be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location. Some work may be performed remotely, at an offsite, non-campus work location. Evenings, weekends and additional hours may be required to meet the needs of the program.

The Wisconsin Union operates from several buildings on the UW-Madison campus including Memorial Union, Union South, Fluno Center, Pyle Center, University Club, Red Gym, and the Student Activity Center. The Wisconsin Union is a financially self-supporting division of the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Financial support for the organization is provided by income earned by over thirty food service units and a variety of nonfood units such as games, guest rooms, space rentals and campus vending. Substantial support is also provided by student fees. The total annual organizational budget is approximately $60 million dollars.

Student Affairs is led by the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs. Our staff is dedicated to serving students and to helping them succeed in and out of the classroom in areas including health and well-being, identity and inclusion, leadership and engagement, and student advocacy. Student Affairs includes departments led by the dean of students; departments that provide identity-based spaces and leadership resources; the Wisconsin Union; University Health Services; and University Recreation and Wellbeing.
