Description

The School of Psychological and Behavioral Sciences (SPBS) at Southern Illinois University Carbondale announces an opening for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in the Brain and Cognitive Sciences program with expertise in Developmental Psychology. The Brain and Cognitive Sciences program provides training in the psychological sciences with core specializations in Lifespan Development, Learning and Cognition, and Neuroscience. The anticipated starting date for all positions is August 16, 2025.

Examples of Duties

The selected candidate will be expected to establish an active research program that engages undergraduate and graduate students, and to seek extramural funding. The candidate will also mentor students enrolled in the Brain and Cognitive Science doctoral program. The position requires teaching a range of undergraduate and graduate courses. Possible courses include Cognitive Neuroscience, Advanced Child Development, Adolescence and Young Adulthood, Adulthood and Aging, Social Development, Personality and Social Development of Adults, Aging, Memory, and Cognition, and specialty courses within the candidate's area of expertise.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications: We seek one candidate with a Ph.D. in Psychology or related discipline and an established record or promise of scholarly productivity are required. Applicants must have a strong background in Developmental Psychology. Area of specialization in human development is open, but especially desirable areas of scholarly interest include cognitive development, social development, moral development, language development, psycholinguistics, developmental neuroscience, and neurodevelopmental disorders (including autism spectrum disorders) from infancy through adolescence, as these complement existing research areas within the Brain and Cognitive Sciences program and the School of Psychological and Behavioral Sciences. ABD applicants will be considered if all requirements for the Ph.D. will be completed by August 15, 2025. If all requirements for the PhD have not been completed, a one-year term appointment may be offered in accordance with university policy.

Preferred Qualifications: Preference will be given to individuals with postdoctoral training and an established history of securing external research funding. Candidates whose research and teaching interests span two or more of the core specializations of the Brain and Cognitive Sciences program are especially desirable.

The schoolhouses undergraduate majors in Psychology and minors in Psychology, Behavior Analysis, Parent Training, and Neuroscience. In addition, the School houses SIU’s on-campus Center for Autism Spectrum Disorders, SIU’s Evaluation and Developmental Center, and Project 12-ways, which provide exceptional opportunities for research collaboration and student training.

The Carbondale area is beautifully nestled between the Ohio and Mississippi rivers and is home to the Shawnee National Forest and several state parks, with a low cost of living, temperate climate, and excellent schools.
