Position Purpose

Leads Thayer career services activities that support the professional development and job search activities of students and alumni. Advises and counsels graduate and undergraduate engineering students and alumni/ae on job search strategies, helping build their career readiness and transition skills. Develops relationships with employers, faculty, and alumni on behalf of Thayer’s students and collaborates with development and other staff colleagues on the implementation of a coordinated external relations program.

Bachelors plus 6 or more years' experience or combination of education and experience

Required Qualifications - Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
  • 6+ years of experience in career counseling and/or professional development in higher education.
  • Exceptional knowledge of current practices in career and professional development, and demonstrated skills in innovative and strategic approaches to career services programming, technology and coaching.
  • Ability to analyze and communicate data, and proficient in Microsoft Excel, and Google sheets.
  • Effective and persuasive in communicating with key internal and external stakeholders.
  • Strong supervisory skills and a versatile team player who thrives on student interaction and excels in relationship building.
  • Proven leadership and management skills
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment.
  • Proven project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in counseling, education, or other related area.
  • Experience working as engineer or with engineers in a technical field.
  • Familiarity with the academic and social pressures encountered by students.

Career Counseling
  • Serving a diverse population, counsels engineering students on subjects related to career planning and the search for permanent and internship positions, supporting students in creating and refining resumes and cover letters, job search strategies, graduate school planning, networking, and job offer and salary negotiations.
  • Organizes and presents career development and professional skills workshops including developing course materials and providing instruction in Thayer required courses.

Recruiting Activities
  • Oversees the design and delivery of recruiting activities for undergraduate and graduate engineering students, including multiple engineering & technology career fairs, recruitment sessions, and orientations.
  • Directs and leads career events related to alumni and career education including, but not limited to, annual career treks to the San Francisco Bay area and Boston area.

Strategic Planning
  • Identifies and analyzes career services needs at Thayer, and establishes program goals and strategies to align with the Thayer Strategic plan.
  • Develops and implements new initiatives that align with the evolving needs of students and alumni.
  • Collaborates with key staff to design, deliver, and distribute surveys.
  • Provides statistical analyses of career outcomes and career service-related data. Develops and presents reports as requested by the Dean and Associate Deans.
  • Recommends and implements strategies and program adjustments to meet Thayer’s goals.

Team Management
  • Hires, trains, and supervises career services staff, including the Associate Director, Assistant Director and Administrator.
  • Evaluates positions, creates and updates roles as needed. Directs the teams’ workflow, duties, and strategic priorities.

Description

Collaboration
  • Cultivates and strengthens communications with and among employers and all staff with external relations responsibilities, including Development, Alumni Relations, the Cook Engineering Design Center.
  • Partners with Thayer Academic Program Directors and Academic and Student Affairs team to support and implement new initiatives related to programmatic requirements and student needs.
  • Works collaboratively with the career services staff in Dartmouth Center for Professional Development ( CPD ), the Tuck School of Business, and the Guarini School of Graduate and Advanced Studies.

Best Practices
  • Through external engagement, remains current on the latest employment trends and disseminates information on career-related developments and industry trends, receiving feedback from various departments and continuous review of professional best practices, of the National Association of Colleges and Employers ( NACE ) standards.
  • Stays abreast of new technologies being used in the field and implement these at Thayer as appropriate.
