General Summary
Host weekday afternoon news program at award-winning NPR affiliate, including all newscasts, program breaks, interviews, and features. Develop local segments compatible with national news program. Prepare news stories for morning news program. Produce interviews and feature stories as assigned.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
- Host local portion of three-hour afternoon national news program, including newscasts, program breaks, weekly local segments, interviews, and feature stories, prepare, and produce extended reports for news broadcasts.
- Develop local segments compatible with national news programs.
- Prepare local news stories for morning news program.
- Post materials, including multimedia assets, to the station's digital platforms, including the station's website and social media accounts.
- File stories of interest to Michigan Public Radio Network and NPR.
- Update developing stories as necessary, including real-time updates via social media.
- Host special coverage as assigned (breaking news, elections, listener call-ins, etc).
- This may require hours outside of scheduled work shifts.
- Supervise/edit reports and material prepared for broadcast by student and part-time news/sports reporters.
- Recommend assignments to be covered by news personnel.
- Participate in station fundraising initiatives.
- Participate in/attend station community events.
- Represent the station at various organizations and outside agency functions.
- Maintain required records of materials used in assigned programs.
- Maintain station operation in compliance with applicable laws and regulations, including but not limited to the maintenance of program and operations logs.
- Perform related departmental duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Three years of experience in broadcast reporting and announcing is necessary.
- At least one year as an anchor or program host is required.
- Knowledge of program hosting, radio reporting, and producing, typically acquired through a Bachelor's degree or the equivalent combination of education and experience, is necessary.
- Strong interviewing skills are a plus.
- Knowledge of NPR journalism standards, especially those that apply to ethics and quality of work, is necessary.
