Job Details
The Department of Hospitality & Tourism at Purdue University Fort Wayne invites applications for a non-tenure track, 9-month, Clinical Assistant Professor of Hospitality Management beginning August 18, 2025. The department seeks candidates with primary expertise in culinary and food and beverage operations, with a solid background in teaching. The candidate should have advanced knowledge of menu development, production, and quantity food preparation. Experience in catering and events preferred. The successful candidate will teach four undergraduate courses per semester in Fall and Spring in the areas of Food Safety and Sanitation, Introduction to Food Selection and Preparation, Food & Beverage Operations, Food History and Culture, Food From Farm to Fork, and other classes as needed. Courses may occasionally be taught online, but typically will be offered face-to-face. This position requires service to the department and university including the development of the program, management of the culinary lab, student recruitment & retention, and other duties as needed.
Minimum Qualifications
- Candidates should hold a master’s or doctoral degree in Hospitality & Tourism, Hospitality Management, or related field. Alternatively, candidates can qualify with 18 credit hours in hospitality if their master’s degree is in an outside area
- Candidate should have valid Food Protection Manager Certification, and attain Instructor/Proctor status with Servsafe within the first 6 months of employment
- Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communications skills
- Ability to effectively use teaching strategies and technologies for in-person and/or online learning

Mastodons roamed the southern Great Lakes region of North America more than 10,000 years ago. But it was in 1968—four years after the university was founded—that Jack Sunderman, chair of the Department of Geology, identified a leg bone of a mastodon found just south of Angola, Indiana. Sunderman and his team of faculty and students subsequently unearthed the entire mastodon skeleton—along with the skull of a baby mastodon.
Later that year, Steve Pettyjohn, who served as the student body president in 1968–69, wrote a letter to the Communicator, the university newspaper, extolling the virtues of choosing the mastodon as the mascot: “It sounds different, strange. That’s exactly why [we should choose it]. I’m tired of slavishly copying what Bloomington, West Lafayette, and other big schools do. Let’s have the courage to be a little different.”
The following year, a student government committee selected the Mastodon as the university mascot. Don lives on as a fierce representative of Purdue Fort Wayne!
