Position begins August 2025

Full-time, professional track, Assistant/Associate Professor of Practice; salary and rank commensurate with qualifications and experience. This position requires relocation to Austin, TX.

Responsibilities will include some of the following, depending on the strengths, experiences, and desires of the successful candidate:
  • Conduct the University Treble Chorus and University Tenor Bass Chorus.
  • Teach undergraduate choral conducting.
  • Teach voice methods for instrumental music education students.
  • Teach undergraduate courses in choral methods/techniques.
  • Teach graduate choral literature.
  • Share leadership of the Repertory Chorus (graduate recital choir).
  • Act as advisor to student chapter of American Choral Directors Association.
  • Develop and maintain positive relations with high school choral directors and programs in Texas and beyond.
  • Recruit fine prospective undergraduate students in B.M. Voice Performance, Choral Studies (Music Education), and the B.A. music degrees, as well as talented singers who intend to pursue majors other than music.
  • Contribute to the growth of the choral area within the Butler School by devising and implementing initiatives and to attract and retain student singers in the UT choirs.
  • Liaise with the Director of Choral Activities, Voice and Opera faculty, and support the work of the Division of Vocal Art by engaging in leadership and service activities within the division, the College the Butler School of Music, and the University.
  • Professors of practice are encouraged to maintain continued engagement with their profession through professional choral conducting or related activities.


Qualifications

DMA preferred, MM required. Demonstrated commitment to preparing young musicians for twenty-first century teaching and performing careers through high professional standards, superb pedagogical skills, effective advocacy and outreach, and active mentoring. Demonstrated excellence as a recruiter and program builder. A record of excellence as a teacher, balanced with evidence of contributions to the professional field of conducting. Demonstrated experience teaching or working with students from many backgrounds; expansive knowledge of repertoires is encouraged, especially those traditionally underrepresented in higher education. Visibility as a teacher, performer and presenter at professional meetings. A candidate with significant experience with and an established record of successful teaching, recruitment, and retention at a university or conservatory is preferred.
