The University of Washington School of Law seeks a full-time faculty member at the rank of Assistant or Associate Teaching Professor. The faculty hired will also direct the Veterans Clinic. The Veterans Clinic (VC) offers substantive legal assistance to our veterans and eligible family members in King County in the areas of VA eligibility and appeals for disability, healthcare, and other benefits as well as military records claims and other related services.  This service is offered as a public service and to provide a challenging and fulfilling experiential learning opportunity for our students. 

Responsibilities:

  1. Supervises and engages student attorneys in direct, continuous (year-long) pro bono representation of King County veterans before the Veterans Administration, Board of Veterans’ Appeals (BVA), Court of Appeals for Veterans Claims (CAVC), Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, and the Supreme Court.  
  2. Provides direct VA claim representation through attorney accreditation or support to VSOs 
  3. Appeals denials of benefits (service-connected or increased rating) to the BVA, CAVC, and higher courts 
  4. Provides representation for motions for reconsideration, remands to BVA or VA, new & material evidence requests to reopen, pending legacy claims, etc. 
  5. Supervises qualified students to practice before the King County Regional Veterans Court 
  6. Advocate for veterans through consultations 
  7. Provides resources to veterans and their families, including for issues outside VA claims 
  8. Teach related or assigned courses, as planned in consultation with the Associate Dean for Academic Administration and considering the specialized work of the Veterans Clinic and institutional needs 

This is a full-time, non-tenure eligible, nine-month position, from September through June of every academic year. Depending on the clinic's caseload, this position may also need to work during the summer months. The initial appointment will be a minimum of 3-year term, with an anticipated start date of September 16, 2025. The base salary range for this position will be $11,000.00  – $15,000 per month, commensurate with experience and qualifications, or as mandated by a U.S. Department of Labor prevailing wage determination. All UW faculty engage in teaching, research, and service.

Qualifications

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) or foreign equivalent
  • Admitted to Washington Bar or ability to become admitted within one year.
