The Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT), an internationally renowned college of art and design, business and technology, of the State University of New York, invites applications for a part-time adjunct faculty position in the Textile/Surface Design Department, School of Art and Design.

The Textile/Surface Design Department prepares students for professional excellence in the textile design industry through a rigorous design-based AAS and BFA curriculum. Course work blends conceptual and technological skills, integrates traditional drawing and painting techniques with digital design, weaving, and screen printing. Faculty members draw on industry background and connections to provide students with knowledge and experiences to successfully enter the textile industry upon graduation.  

With close ties to industry, FIT draws faculty from the city's art, business, and design elite, and from the rich academic community of the region. The College continually seeks creative faculty members who are passionate about their field and demonstrate exceptional professional capability in the core competencies of instruction design, learning enrichment, globalism, and use of technology, as well as mastery of established and emerging industry practices.

Job Description:

The Textile/Surface Design department is recruiting a pool of applicants for possible adjunct teaching positions for TD 334 Complex Dobby Wovens. Successful candidates will have expertise in multi-harness, advanced level drafting, experience using 16-24 harness hand looms (AVL compu-dobby preferred), and experience using industry standard software such as Pointcarre or Nedgraphics for dobby and experience with technical packs for developing woven fabrics. Ideal candidates have strong skills in layouts, repeats, color, ability to analyze and research current market color and concept trends and have experience designing wovens for the fashion or home industry or have a robust fiber arts practice using complex weaving.

Adjunct instructors deliver relevant course material, assess student performance, provide guidance and assistance to students both in and out of the classroom, and submit grades on time. Course descriptions are available in the online catalog.

Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Candidates must have a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree
  • Relevant 6 years of industry experience and or its equivalent.

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • At least one year of teaching experience at the college level.
  • Master of Fine Arts degree or equivalent.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Experience setting up floor looms
  • Technical product development experience
  • Expertise in technical weave knowledge of 24 harnesses including standard industry terminology and yarns.
  • Experience designing for wovens with Pointcarre, or ability to become adept with proprietary software with limited training.
  • Ability to draft complex constructions and communicate woven structure through lecture and visual presentations.
  • Ability to instruct and ensure the safe use of tools and machinery and successfully communicate conceptual ideas for class projects through lectures and visual presentation.

Additional Information:

This is a part-time position, adjunct teaching position beginning in Spring 2025. Review of applications will commence immediately and continue until the position is filled. The department will keep this posting open to create a pool of candidates for potential future adjunct assignments. Compensation

The UCE-FIT Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) governs the compensation, benefits, and conditions of employment. 

$84.60 per hour based on minimum qualifications. The final rate, step and appointment rank are determined by a candidate's ability to demonstrate that they meet the respective school's additional criteria for hiring "above the first step," in accordance with the CBA Adjunct Salary Schedules (pp 82-83).

Physical Requirements and Work Environment

The working conditions for this position will be any combination of the classroom, lab, and/or office space. Certain roles may be required to handle machinery and chemicals. The physical requirement for this position will require occasional sitting, constant standing, occasional bending, frequent walking, and occasionally lifting 10 lbs. or less.
