Job Summary
This position provides support to Environmental Health & Safety’s Fire & Life Safety program to ensure compliance with campus policies and applicable regulations and standards.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Inspect University Housing units for fire and life safety code or policy violations, and take remedial actions as directed.
- Communicate the findings of inspections and maintain associated documentation.
- Address safety hazards identified in University Housing properties as directed.
- Conduct University Housing building inspections per assigned schedule to address fire prevention, life safety code issues, and adequacy of fire protection systems and equipment.
- Document and maintain records of inspection and correction activities.
- Conduct or assist with training personnel and/or students in fire prevention, fire extinguisher use, and hot work.
- Conduct fire drills as directed.
- Assist with special campus event activities. For example, egress issues, tent permitting, outdoor grill use, etc.
- Issue hot work permits as required.
- Respond to fire alarms and assist with campus fire and life safety systems as directed to facilitate campus operations.
- Respond to after-hours emergencies, including holidays and weekends.
- Provide support for University events as necessary, including those outside of normal business hours.
- Review/revise existing and develop new standard operating procedures per established best practices and/or department and University policies.
- Document and maintain records relating to the Fire and Life Safety Program as directed.
- Participate in after-hours rotating on-call program, as assigned.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Associates degree in fire science or related field. (No experience required with a Associate’s degree.)
- Two years of fire safety experience with no degree.
- Equivalent combination of relevant experience may be substituted as appropriate.
- Ability to obtain NFPA 1031 Fire Inspector I certification or equivalent within one year of hire date.
- Must be proficient in the use of Microsoft Office applications.
- Associates degree in fire science or related field.
- Prior code enforcement or other field inspection experience.
- Knowledge of fire and life safety codes. Prior fire safety background.
- Current NFAP 1301 Fire Inspector I certification or equivalent.
- Knowledge of a wide range of principles, concepts, and practices in applying established analytical and evaluative methods and techniques to fire safety program operations.
- Ability to use firefighting and investigating equipment, including fire extinguishers, oxygen analyzers, gas and toxic materials detectors and personal protective equipment.
- Ability to organize and effectively coordinate multiple tasks, with good follow-through.
- Ability to work independently or with small groups without direct supervision.
- Excellent attention to detail and ability to take direction.
- Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal skills.
- DRIVING REQUIRED . This job requires a class “C” operator’s driver’s license. The applicant selected must provide a current three-year driving record from the state in which the person currently resides. If not currently a Texas resident, a Texas driver’s license must be obtained within 30 days of becoming a Texas resident.
