Position Title: Adult Education Instructor (ESL Program)
Department: WIT-Adult Education
Campus Location: Washburn Tech East

Position Summary: Washburn University Institute of Technology seeks applications for an instructor in the Adult Education Program specifically in the area of ESL. This position is a grant-funded, part-time 12 month contract, Monday-Friday, benefit eligible which requires 32 hours per week. This position is funded in full or in part by a grant award. The hire date may be as soon as December 1, 2024.
Instruction will take place at Washburn University Institute of Technology East location 2014 SE Washington Street, Topeka, KS 66604. The position reports to the Director of Adult Education. The instructor will work closely with all other adult education staff to coordinate service delivery and program design.
Each selected candidate will have a demonstrated commitment to pursuing teaching excellence at Washburn University, including a dedication to developing inclusive teaching practices that engage students from all backgrounds.
Essential Functions:
• Adopt the curriculum used by the ESL program; prepare lesson plans and instruct students through individual instruction and/or small group instruction; and at times via zoom or online delivery of instruction.
• The instruction will focus on reading, vocabulary development, listening, speaking, writing and grammar
• Perform effectively in the learning environment by being prepared, maintaining discipline, and engaging students in the learning process
• Take daily attendance and submit attendance weekly and follow up with students who have missed class without communication.
• Collect and analyze student performance data with the Director of the Adult Education Program and the ABE Coordinator.
• Evaluate student learning and adjust instruction as needed.
• Maintain records of student progress and contribute to the documentation of the ESL program for the mandatory grant reports
• Act in a manner that promotes collegial relationships and shows respect toward students, staff and colleagues
• Seek opportunities for professional development or advancement of educational degrees
• Participate in recruitment and orientation efforts as needed.
• Participate in college-wide staff development days, departmental meetings and fulfill committee assignments if schedule allows.
• Complete mandatory training offered through Kansas Board of Regents
• Participate in graduation ceremonies and other ceremonial events as pertains to the department
• In addition to these essential functions, these instructors are expected to adhere to college and University policies and to perform additional job-related duties as assigned or as appropriate.
Required Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree
• Experience Teaching Adults
• ESL teaching experience
• Demonstrated dedication to developing inclusive teaching practices that engage students from all backgrounds
• Official transcripts required once hired
Preferred Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree in education, Developmental Education
• Experience Co-Teaching or Team Teaching, especially in classes where basic skills are developed in conjunction with technical instruction.
Part time Exempt Mon-Fri 7:30am - 4:30pm
