Detailed Job Description
The Department of Modern Languages and Cultures at Rochester Institute of Technology seeks applications for a Japanese lecturer position starting in August 2025. Candidates will possess a Ph.D. in Japanese, East Asian studies, or a related field, along with a minimum of three years of successful college-level Japanese language teaching experience. Exceptional candidates with a master's degree and extensive experience will also be considered. Native or near-native proficiency in both Japanese and English required.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Teaching undergraduate Japanese language courses at all levels through communicative-based methods, creating teaching materials, assisting with events related to Japanese language and culture, and holding office hours.
  • Teaching and updating or developing Japanese culture courses in English and courses related to the candidate's field of specialization
  • Contributing to interdisciplinary courses
  • Serving on departmental, college, and institute committees and attending related meetings.
A successful applicant is skilled in conducting classroom communicative activities in Japanese, in which students are rigorously engaged in speaking. Those who have experience in team-teaching are preferable.

Department/College Description
The Department of Modern Languages and Cultures offers a B.S. in Applied Modern Language and Culture with tracks in Chinese, French, Japanese, and Spanish, in addition to minors, immersions, and general education courses in American Sign Language and Deaf Cultural Studies, Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Latino/Latina/Latin American Studies, Language Science, Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish. The Department houses a Modern Language Technology Center where faculty and students actively integrate technology in language teaching and learning.

The College of Liberal Arts is one of nine colleges within Rochester Institute of Technology. The College has over 150 faculty in 13 departments in the arts, humanities and social sciences. The College currently offers fourteen undergraduate degree programs and five Master degrees, serving over 800 students. A new Ph.D. program in Cognitive Science, with Language as one of the areas, is broadly interdisciplinary with several partner units across the university.

Required Minimum Qualifications
  • Ph.D. in Japanese or a related field. Exceptional candidates with a master's degree and extensive experience will be considered.
  • Native or near-native proficiency in Japanese and English
  • At least three years of successful college-level Japanese language teaching experience
  • Experience in teaching Japanese through communicative-based methods
  • Evidence of successful teamwork and collaboration in teaching and/or projects, and literacy in technology
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, organizational, collaboration, and administrative skills and adaptability
  • Ability to contribute in meaningful ways to the college's continuing commitment to cultural diversity, pluralism, and individual differences.
