The College of Social and Behavioral Sciences (SBS) and the Department of History at the University of Arizona invite applications for a full-time tenure-track position in Persian and Iranian History (early modern/modern period) at the Assistant Professor level to begin Fall, 2025. Designated as the Roshan Institute Professor in Persian and Iranian Studies, the successful candidate will contribute to the undergraduate and graduate programs in the Department of History and the School of Global Studies (specifically Middle Eastern and North African Studies), as well as actively participate in the Roshan Graduate Interdisciplinary Program in Persian and Iranian Studies.
The Department of History offers programs leading to the Bachelor of Arts (BA), Master of Arts (MA), Accelerated Masters (AMP), and the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) with engaged affiliations with the Middle Eastern and North African Studies and the Center for Middle Eastern Studies, a Title VI National Resource Center.
SBS academic programs offer Persian and Iranian Studies courses related to anthropology, Persian language, classical and contemporary literature, cinema, and linguistics. The Roshan Graduate Interdisciplinary Program in Persian and Iranian Studies, located in the Graduate College, offers programs leading to Master of Arts (MA) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.). Duties & Responsibilities
- Teach four 3-credit courses a year, a combination of undergraduate and graduate classes.
- Maintain regularly scheduled office hours
- Serve on reviews and thesis and dissertation committees for graduate students.
- Mentor undergraduate and graduate students.
- Research and publish, contributing to the field of history at the national and international levels.
- Contribute to faculty governance and service at the program, department, college, university, and professional levels.
- Participate in outreach, student advising, recruitment, and other activities that enhance student engagement.
Minimum Qualifications
- PhD in History or relevant discipline
- Research expertise in Persian and Iranian History, early modern/modern period
- Experience with academic programmatic activities
- Native or near-native command of the Persian language
Preferred Qualifications
- Demonstrated potential for sustained research excellence
- Demonstrated potential for sustained instructional excellence
- Experience with diverse student cohorts
