The salary range for this position is $83,771 to $93,107 depending on the successful candidate's years of teaching experience at the college-level
Purpose:
We welcome applications from excellent scholars across the field of New Testament studies. Pauline and Johannine literatures are particular areas of interest. In addition to demonstrating firm grounding in historical-critical methods and the ability to teach Greek at all levels, the successful candidate will be conversant in a range of approaches rooted in critical theory and cultural studies. The successful candidate will exhibit a commitment to doing theology in global, intercultural, and interdisciplinary contexts. We encourage applications from scholars whose work substantively engages ecological justice, lived religion, or material culture. The successful candidate will demonstrate a history of success as a teaching scholar and will understand and support the school’s Jesuit and Ignatian mission. Ability to teach and supervise in French and/or Spanish is a positive consideration.
The successful candidate will:
- Teach four graduate courses per year on the semester system,
including master’s-level foundation courses in New Testament and
advanced seminars for doctoral and advanced master’s students. The
successful candidate will offer a range of courses that serve
JST-SCU’s and GTU’s extraordinarily diverse student body and
program needs.
- Direct and contribute to comprehensive exam, thesis, and
dissertation committees.
- Develop a research agenda that consistently generates excellent
peer-reviewed publications.
- Provide service to the school, university, and GTU as
appropriate to rank.
- Have, or be willing to develop, expertise in rigorous and
engaging online education.

Jesuit School of Theology
Located in Berkeley, CA, JST-SCU is an international center of theology and ministerial formation, a graduate school of Santa Clara University, and a formation center of the Jesuit Conference of Canada and the USA. Students come from around the world to participate in JST-SCU’s academically rigorous, socially engaged, and spiritually vibrant community. JSTSCU is an ecclesiastical faculty accredited and approved by the Vatican Dicastery for Culture and Education. JST-SCU faculty are teaching scholars who balance a commitment to quality teaching with active programs of research and creative scholarship. Candidates should demonstrate not only potential for excellent graduate teaching, but also promise in sustained research and scholarly publication and in service to the school, the GTU, the community, and/or the Church. The successful candidate will mentor students in JST-SCU’s ecclesiastical programs (STL and STD), as well as our various master’s degrees and GTU programs.

Qualifications:
Ph.D. or equivalent degree or ABD (all but dissertation) in New Testament studies (or closely related field) required by the appointment start date of August 1, 2025. Evidence of a strong agenda for scholarship and promise of excellent peer-reviewed publications in the area of expertise. Evidence of effective and excellent teaching. Experience mentoring or directing graduate work is desirable.
