Job Summary
This position will serve as an international student advisor for a portion of the F1 student population at Old Dominion University. This position requires a high level of knowledge of immigration regulations, as well as the ability to serve as one of ten Designated School Officials ( DSO ) and one of five Alternate Responsible Officers ( ARO ) for the SEVIS immigration database. In addition to in-person advising, this position will be responsible for creating, reviewing, and approving federal immigration documents for ensuring maintenance of status. This position also assists with preparation of H1B applications for submission to US Citizenship & Immigration Services. This position will be the primary point of contact for the batching system database, and will work to ensure data integrity among the various systems used for processing international student records. The position will also serve as backup for several other processes, including employment paperwork for non-immigrants working on campus, immigration presentations for students and departments, and J1 scholar documentation

Minimum Qualifications
- Master’s Degree in Higher Education Administration, International Studies, Cross-cultural communication, or TESOL required.
- Basic knowledge of F, J, and H-1B visa regulations, and SEVIS .
- Basic knowledge of the accepted practices, policies, and procedures employed when assisting international students.
- Basic knowledge of nonimmigrant visa status requirements.
- Proficiency in data management and report writing.
- Excellent organizational, interpersonal, written and oral communication skills and attention to detail.
- The ability to work independently and to handle multiple assignments and tight deadlines.
- Ability to access SEVIS as a Designated School Official and Alternate Responsible Officer.
- Demonstrated ability to interpret complex policies and regulations.
- Ability to communicate effectively with people from different cultural backgrounds.
- Basic relevant immigration regulation, advisement, and compliance experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Considerable experience working with information management software, such as Banner, Peoplesoft, ISSM or TerraDotta.
- Basic experience working with diverse populations.
- Considerable experience working in a Higher Education setting.
- Considerable experience administering and advising federal F, J and NATO immigration regulations as DSO / ARO in a higher education setting.
- Fluency in at least one foreign language.
- Some experience living abroad.
- Considerable experience with advising individual students.
