As a part of a diverse community of faculty and staff who represent many faith systems and worldviews, Marian University seeks a Custodian/Housekeeping Associate to promote our Catholic Franciscan mission and identity by working with the Manager of Operations to provide a clean and orderly environment for the student, staff, and visitors of the College.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Actively engage the Catholic Franciscan mission and identity of Marian University by modeling the Franciscan Sponsorship Values and honoring the legacy of the founding congregation through transformative education, unity in diversity, leadership through service, integrating faith and life, and institutional policies.
  • Clean assigned spaces.
  • Dust and wet mop all non-carpeted floors and stairwells.
  • Vacuum carpets daily and upholstered furniture periodically.
  • Clean restrooms, floors, fixtures, chrome, glass, walls, restock paper and soap supplies, and empty trash receptacles.
  • Properly remove and dispose of all trash.
  • Spot clean walls, wash walls as assigned.
  • Wipe, damp wipe, or spot clean desks, furniture, window ledges, lockers, and shelving as needed, or assigned.
  • Equipment use in restrooms and other hard surface floors as needed.
  • High dust above shoulder height, also dust vest covers.
  • Clean whiteboards and erasers.
  • Clean internal glass, entrance doors and internal doors.
  • Clean fixtures in labs and other areas.
  • Clean and polish chrome.
  • Cleans washers and dryers as assigned.
  • Helps with setups and teardowns.
  • Perform stripping and waxing of applicable floors.
  • Perform carpet cleaning with extractors.
  • Make recommendations on supplies and make sure stock is maintained.
  • Clean elevators and elevators tracks.
  • Report needed repairs to building and equipment to supervisor.
  • Snow removal.
  • Attend all department training sessions.
  • Employee MUST follow all College and departmental rules, regulations/policies and procedures.
  • Employee must perform all duties and responsibilities in a safe manner.
  • Other duties as assigned.

  • Shows courtesy and respect in interactions with fellow employees, students subordinates, and supervisors.
  • Communicates regularly with supervisor about Department issues.
  • Meets department productivity standards.
  • Walking, pulling, bending, lifting, pushing, ability to lift minimum of 25 pounds, but not more than 50 pounds, climbing stairs and ladders up to 6ft in height.
Required Qualifications:
  • High School diploma or GED certificate are desired but not required based on successful and applicable work experience.
  • Prior Work Experience/Skills:
    • One year or more of successful custodial experience in a school environment is desired.
    • Working knowledge of and experience with trade skills in maintenance-related areas such as electrical, plumbing, carpentry and HVAC is desired.
    • Experience using normal chemicals and equipment appropriate to the Custodian position.
On-the-Job Training/Orientation Required:
  • On-the-job training will be based on skills and experience.
Essential Functions:
  • Work hours necessary to perform job requirements satisfactorily on a regular basis.
  • Manage absence from work in responsible manner to ensure service to client, work teams, and coworkers.
  • Comply with Marian University policies and practices and seeking clarification of them when necessary.
Physical Requirements:
  • Must be able to perform physical activities, such as but not limited to lifting heavy items (up to 50 pounds unassisted), bending, standing, climbing, or walking. While performing the duties of the job, may be required to stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, and may be required to climb on a ladder.

Machines, Tools, Equipment and Work Aids:
  • Experience using normal chemicals and equipment appropriate to the Custodian position.
