The Instruction Services and Support
AV Specialist coordinates the planning, implementation,
maintenance, and operational support of AV technology and practices
at Notre Dame. The position will be responsible for providing AV
technical support for the University’s academic and community
functions, as well as researching and establishing best practice
standards regarding AV hardware and software supporting
instructional, collaboration, and event systems. Collaborate with
faculty, staff, and students to promote the effective use of
instructional and conferencing technologies. Develop and
coordinates appropriate training and workshops regarding AV
services and support.
Essential functions will include:
Serves as NDMU technology specialist
promoting use of AV campus standards. Remains on the ‘reading-edge’
as it relates to understanding current and emerging technologies.
Researches, designs, and oversees
installation and maintenance of AV systems campus-wide. Ensures
technology adequately supports instructional needs in learning
spaces and works with appropriate others to establish and implement
web conferencing systems leveraging current software systems and
evolving standards. Focuses on simple, durable solutions that work
well for teachers and students.
Works with faculty to understand and
translate requirements into technology-enabled systems and
applications. Ensures classroom technologies facilitate rich
teacher/student interactions. Studies and configures presentation
equipment to maximize the end user experience. Identifies, analyzes
and showcases new systems and technologies. Encourages technology
adoption and works to develop a culture relying on appropriate
successful faculty as mentors. Helps define video library tools and
navigation standards.
Diagnose, evaluate, and
perform/coordinate repair of broken AV systems and equipment.
Oversees problem resolution as needed. Coordinates equipment
break/fix using campus problem tracking system. Maintains
inventory of replacement parts to ensure quick turn-around
regarding repairs.
Coordinates student workers and
training. Maintains campus spaces using student IT workers.
Schedules routine computer upgrades and re-imaging in tech-enabled
classrooms; refreshes systems as needed.
Promotes web conferencing and
remote-learning technologies. Encourages use of campus AV
technology to facilitate instruction and collaboration. Outlines
conferencing technology standards and works to reduce the gap
between teaching/learning and business AV standards wherever
possible.
Develops and provides training aids.
Proactively develops online instructional guides, FAQs,
documentation, videos, etc. as needed. Works with IS&S Manager
to develop and encourage reliance on IT Online helpdesk tools and
resources.
Facilitates interact with
Instructional Support staff campus-wide. Identified
opportunities to work with AV technical support staff in Academic
Affairs and Auxiliary Services to facilitate cross-training, share
knowledge and establish better-defined campus standards.
Assist in development of interactive
learning tools. Encourages the benefit of leveraging software,
hardware and systems that work well together. Demonstrates the
value of selecting appropriate software and hardware products, when
possible, to minimize challenges and maximize efficiency. Remains
conversant with the application of mobile and smart devices to
reduce barriers to learning and collaboration where
possible.
Maintains, enhances, and supports
campus instructional AV, CATV/video networks. Provides
support and direction regarding the use of special equipment and
systems that leverage AV technologies. Seeks to understand
and standardize systems, wherever possible, used in instructional
spaces, Communication Arts studio, campus auditoriums, and
technology-rich spaces across campus.
Ensures semester preparations are
completed. Audits, coordinates, and provides support for
instructional facilities and equipment; conducts semester
preparation activities regarding instructional facilities,
equipment and procedures.
Assure policies, procedures, and
practices are in accordance with federal and state laws and
regulations and the University’s operational policies and
procedures.
Job Qualifications
Education: Associate degree in a
related field from an accredited college or university required.
Bachelor’s degree preferred. Additional years of related experience
may substitute for required education.
Experience: Minimum two years of
related experience delivering AV and computer related technology
services. Experience in a college or university setting is
preferred. Must possess a working understanding of
instructional technology setup and use as it relates to projectors,
audio systems, and instructional control systems (preferably
Crestron, Extron, etc.). Must have experience supporting video
streaming devices, document cameras, interactive ‘smart’ systems,
and related peripheral devices in both Windows and Mac
environments. Must have experience supporting Microsoft Office,
Windows, Adobe, IOS devices, etc.
Skills/Aptitude: Broad overall
knowledge and experience in the use of computer, audio, video, and
networking technologies. Thorough understanding and experience in
classroom and/or instructional based video and audio systems and
the ability to use this information to troubleshoot and resolve
system conflicts. Demonstrated understanding of desktop imaging
tools used to support Windows and Mac computers used for
instruction. Experience utilizing Microsoft Intune or related
products preferred. Ability to quick learn new
instructional delivery tools and technologies, and adapt to an
evolving field. Adept and enthusiastic about learning new
technologies and new skills. Ability to manage and
prioritize multiple competing tasks to a successful and/or logical
conclusion. Commitment to developing and maintaining AV
technology standards and practices. Ability to work
independently and collaborate with others of varying levels of
technical experience, including the ability to mentor departmental
technical staff to ensure equipment and operational consistency and
to solicit support regarding the delivery and maintenance of
campus-wide systems. Possess excellent organizational
and communication skills and have a commitment to customer-service.
Excellent time management, organizational, and documentation
skills. Must understand the value of creating easy to understand
documentation.
Working Conditions: Normal office
environment (walking, sitting, climbing stairs, reaching, etc.).
Moderate physical demands such as bending, carrying, kneeling,
lifting, and pushing will be required. Must be able to lift 50lbs.
Must be able to perform tasks while on a ladder. Position schedule
requires afternoon shift work Tuesday through Saturday in order to
support evening and Saturday classes/events. Occasional overtime
may be required.
