Pay Frequency:Annual A. POSITION PURPOSE
The Associate Dean for Student Life (Associate Dean) provides leadership and oversight for the Student Conduct System and contributes to the development and implementation of student life programs and initiatives related to student conduct. Through these programs, the Associate Dean will collaborate with the Santa Clara community to support a campus environment that establishes and integrates students’ understanding of their rights and responsibilities and of the University’s expectations and standards resulting from the unique mission, goals and values of the institution.
The Associate Dean provides leadership, direction and supervision to three Assistant Deans who serve as hearing officers in the University Student Conduct System. The Associate Dean provides leadership and consultation to the Assistant Deans as well as expertise for students, faculty, staff and the broader community for issues that intersect with conduct. The Associate Dean is also a hearing officer and will hear appeals for cases with sanctions up to and inclusive of Suspension on the behalf of the Dean of Students when delegated to do so. The Associate Dean serves in the CARE Team system responding to Student of Concern reports.
The Associate Dean serves in the Office of Student Life’s 24/7 on-call rotation.
B. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Staff Supervision
a. Supervise three Assistant Deans, providing leadership, direction, and support.
b. Develop a comprehensive staff development program including orientation for new staff, and professional development opportunities.
c. Develop, implement and review recruitment, selection, and performance evaluation processes for those directly supervised.
d. Conduct annual performance evaluation processes for those supervised.
2. University Student Conduct System Hearing Officer
a. Provide leadership and overall direction for the implementation of the University Student Conduct System, including collaborative implementation of processes related to student conduct and community standards.
b. Serve as a hearing officer, with full sanctioning authority, and appeal officer authority for cases with sanctions up to and inclusive of suspension on the behalf of the Dean of Students when delegated to do so .
c. Train and advise the University Discipline Council (UDC) and the UDC Board of Appeals.
d. Assign cases to appropriate hearing boards or offices.
e. Oversee conduct documentation and information management.
f. Serve as liaison to appropriate departments regarding the student conduct process. (HRL, Campus Safety Services, Athletics, etc.)
g. Create quarterly and annual statistical reports regarding student conduct and University responses.
h. Remain current on research, practices and legal components of the University student conduct processes.
i. Create and maintain records pertaining to student conduct.
j. Initiate consultation with the Office of General Counsel and Office for Equal Opportunity and Title IX when appropriate.
k. Serve as Campus Security Authority when informed of allegations regulated under the Clery Act.
l. Serve as a Responsible Employee for allegations regulated under Title IX.
m. Remain current on best practices, and legal issues pertinent to student conduct systems, conflict resolution, and restorative justice.
3. Restorative Justice
a. Oversee the implementation of a Restorative Justice framework in the Student Conduct System.
b. Serve as the chairperson of the Restorative Justice Community of Practice .
c. Provide restorative justice practices support for campus departments using the practice.
d. Provide facilitation and support services for escalated cases as needed.
e. Organize and present Restorative Justice coaching campus partners, and training for new professionals.
f. Create and update new and existing Restorative Justice support materials.
g. Align Restorative Justice Practices with the University’s values, mission, vision, and strategic plan.
4. Student Well-Being
a. Serve as a member of the Office of Student Life team by assisting colleagues in the office when student conduct and student of concern caseloads are impacted.
b. Serve as a member of the Office of Student Life’s 24/7 on-call rotation for the purpose of addressing significant student safety, well-being, and conduct issues that happen on and off-campus during non-business hours.
c. Initiate appropriate responses to student of concern issues, including communication with campus entities, creation and distribution of publications, and support of student programs.
d. Serve as a participant in the CARE Team system which is inclusive of contributing expertise and implementing response actions for CARE Referrals.
5. Policy and Procedure Development, Interpretation, and Implementation
a. Serve as a University resource for student conduct and well-being issues on and off campus, inclusive of communicating with parents and guardians.
b. Responsible for policy interpretation and its implementation for student well-being, and other student misconduct matters.
c. Provide advice, consultation, and support in the development of University-wide policies and procedures, and responses to issues and trends affecting the campus.
6. Compliance, Governance and Risk Management
a. Remain current on federal laws that pertain to the University and intersect with student conduct.
b. Ensure that SCU and the Office of Student Life are in compliance with federal laws and statutes. (FERPA, HIPAA, Drug Fee Schools / Drug Free Workplace, Clery Act, ADA, SEVIS, GEPA, Title IX, Higher Education Amendments, Gramm-Leach Bliley Act, and Sexual Assault Victims Bill of Rights.)
c. When appropriate, collaborate with other departments to maintain campus wide compliance.
d. Serve as the point of contact within the Office of Student Life for issues related to risk management.
e. Maintain contact with appropriate university and outside resources on issues of risk management.
f. Remain current with issues related to risk management
g. Educate the staff within the Vice Provost’s area of responsibility about the University’s liability / risk management policies and protocols.
7. Other Responsibilities
a. Participate and sometimes lead the development of new initiatives, services, programs pertaining to student life.
b. Serve on University-wide committees as a representative of Student Life as appropriate to areas of responsibility.

D. QUALIFICATIONS

E. Education
Master’s degree in higher education administration, college student services, education, counseling or related field preferred and a minimum of 12 years relevant experience, or combination of education and relevant experience.
Experience Required
● Prior supervisory experience.
● Minimum of three years of related experience in coordinating student conduct and community standards required. Experience in handling residence life disciplinary cases helpful but not required.

● Experience with restorative justice practices.
● Experience serving as an on-call staff person to provide crisis response 24/7.
● Experience with building community and addressing student safety and well-being in the context of a student residential program.
● Experience working with fraternity and sorority organizations and their local and national leaders and advisors.
● Experience working with local government structures, committees and functions of local city councils.
● Experience with assessing risk of harm to self or others with training by National Association for Behavioral Intervention and Threat Assessment or similar professional organization.
● Experience with responding to sexual violence and compliance with Title IX.
● Bilingual / fluent in multiple languages (e.g. Spanish, Mandarin, Cantonese).
