Position Summary

The Vice President for Administration and Treasurer ( VPAT ) reports to the University President and serves as a senior member of the President’s executive staff. The VPAT must work collaboratively with executive staff in strategic planning, financial planning and forecasting, professional development, and internal financial policy development. The VPAT serves as the President’s principal advisor on fiscal affairs and administrative and facilities operations. The VPAT has functional responsibility for the university’s fiscal management and related legal and regulatory compliance, business office services, facilities management, police and security operations, human resources, information technology services, and auxiliary enterprises.

Essential Job Functions of Position

The Vice President of Administration and Treasurer must be committed to the university’s overall mission and serve with the highest degree of integrity and professionalism. The VPAT is responsible for making transparent data-based decisions within available resources and functions effectively in a participatory governance structure. The VPAT is an officer of the University’s Board of Regents ( WUBOR ), serving as the Treasurer.

Collects all income for all funds for Washburn University. Oversees the development of the university’s annual operating and capital budgets and ensures that appropriate reports are provided to the President and the Board of Regents. Assures sufficient funds are available for the university to maintain a positive cash flow.

Oversees activities and assets associated with public fund investments. Responsible for the financial accounting system and prepares a variety of financial reports and statistical data concerning the university’s financial affairs.

Directs the supervision of the construction and payment for equipping new buildings, major renovations, or significant projects. Assembles and prepares special financial reports, analyses, and any other information requested by the President, the Board, or the Board’s subcommittees.

The VPAT has functional responsibility for the university’s facilities, general business functions (e.g., the bursar and purchasing), planning for and the application of technology to serve Washburn’s needs, and all benefits management, administrative personnel functions, and collective bargaining negotiations for grounds, maintenance, and custodial employees.

Develops and implements a comprehensive, multi-year financial model through detailed analysis and projections to guide strategic decision-making and provides detailed studies of the financial implications of the university’s operations, focusing on efficiencies and effectiveness.

Perform other job-related duties as assigned or as appropriate.

Non-Essential Job Functions of Position

Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree in accounting, business administration, finance, or a related area. At least ten years of progressively responsible success as a financial and administrative leader/manager in complex organizations, with executive-level experience.

Preferred: Master’s degree in accounting, business administration, finance, or a related area. CPA . Previous experience in higher education. Experience with financial software, the management of information and technology, and human resources.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Accounting/auditing skills and knowledge of applicable state and federal laws and requirements.
  • Well-developed organizational and communication skills with a demonstrated commitment to diversity.
  • Proven success managing people and resources, and in providing effective financial analysis and reporting skills.



Preferred: Prior experience with SCT Banner/Ellucian.
