The Department of Public Administration and Policy (DPAP) in the School of Public Affairs (SPA) at American University invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor beginning August 1, 2022. Candidates who are at the level of senior Assistant Professor will also be considered. Applicants should have a PhD in economics, applied economics, or a related field.

Qualifications

We welcome applications from candidates with an excellent record or promise of scholarly research and exceptional teaching in applied microeconomics with a focus on social welfare policy, public economics, or inequality. Possible research topics of interest include but are not limited to the causes and consequences of economic instability, policies that address socio-economic and racial disparities, intergenerational mobility, and anti-poverty policy. The position will contribute to efforts to facilitate collaborative and externally funded scholarship across multiple units across the campus focusing on social equity as one of the most significant issues of the present and the future. Social welfare policy is a signature concentration in our internationally renowned MPA and MPP programs and a popular area of focus for our doctoral students. Teaching responsibilities will include courses in the School’s Master of Public Policy, Master of Public Administration, and doctoral degree programs. In addition to producing high quality scholarship and effective teaching, responsibilities will include mentoring graduate students and service. The ideal candidate will also have an existing record or promise in the ability to raise external funding to support research and training. The search committee is especially interested in candidates who, through their research, teaching, and/or service will contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community.
