The School of Sustainability (SOS) within the College of Global Futures (CGF) at Arizona State University invites applications for two full-time faculty appointments in sustainable energy systems. One is a tenure-track, assistant professor rank and the second is tenured/tenure-track at the rank of assistant, associate, or full professor. These positions are expected to begin employment in August 2025.

We are looking for interdisciplinary scholars who study the dynamics of transitioning from fossil fuels to sustainable energy systems, including considerations of technology, markets, finance, policy, and/or governance. We especially encourage applicants who apply data analytics and modeling approaches (e.g., economics, techno-economics, technological change, system dynamics) to the analysis of energy transitions and energy policy, including issues of just transitions and energy justice.

The successful candidate will be expected to bring an interdisciplinary perspective to research in sustainable energy transitions. They will be expected to develop, grow and lead an independently funded and collaborative research program; educate and mentor students; contribute to curriculum development at both the undergraduate and graduate levels; participate in professional and university service; engage with a range of stakeholders and/or communities; and exhibit or grow into leadership in their field. We especially seek candidates who have a compelling vision for research and teaching that aligns with the mission of the School of Sustainability and ASU’s Charter for a New American University.

Qualifications
Required:

  • Ph.D. in an appropriate field at the time of appointment.
  • Experience in teaching and mentoring commensurate with the rank of appointment.
  • Excellence in research commensurate with the rank of appointment. For assistant professors this includes evidence of the potential to publish in leading academic journals. For associate and full professors this includes a record of publishing in leading academic journals and a record of externally-sponsored research.
  • Capability in teaching at least one of the following courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels: sustainable energy systems and technologies, energy economics, and data analytics for sustainable energy.
  • Potential for the candidate’s scholarship, teaching, and outreach activities to foster the values of ASU as reflected in the ASU Charter.

Desired (candidates need not meet all of these):

  • A research program that is policy-relevant for energy system transitions in either the U.S. or the Global South.
  • Current or future research related to justice in the energy transition.
  • Experience with technical and/or economic modeling related to energy systems.
  • Experience with collaborating with colleagues from different disciplines.
  • Experience with engaging and communicating with stakeholders and communities involved in energy systems transitions.
