Job Summary

The University of Colorado, Boulder encourages applications for the Director of the CU Children's Center! The CU Children's Center is licensed through the Colorado Department of Early Childhood to provide childcare for children of families affiliated with the University of Colorado including; residents of Family Housing Apartments, faculty, staff, students, and alumni. The Center provides a nurturing and safe environment for a diverse population of children ages 6 weeks to age 8.

This position is responsible for planning, coordinating, and administering the Center's operations. Serves as the administrative facilitator of all center operations and organizational mission activities. Provides vision and mission direction of Center operations. In collaboration with early childhood educators, the director oversees the development and implementation of appropriate care and safety standards; the development of age-appropriate curricula and lesson plans, and supervises, directs, and trains staff, student employees, and volunteers. This position works with families, consulting with parents regarding the needs of children.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

Center Administration
  • Plans, creates, and carries out the administration of the children’s center operations in all areas.
  • Oversees the scheduling and placement of children in a classroom with a commitment to ensure maximum enrollment and revenue.
  • Make recommendations to the Assistant Vice Chancellor concerning policy and or operation changes and improvements.
  • Oversees and supervises billing, accounts receivable, bookkeeping functions, and recommends childcare rates.
  • Oversee all collections of tuition from parent fees, scholarships, and contracted services with Boulder County Social Services.
  • In cooperation with Assistant Vice Chancellor, determines the operating budget for children’s center operations, and monitors expenses and income to ensure that the budget is met.
  • Ongoing monitoring of compliance variables to maintain the Center license, Colorado Shines accreditation, and other required credentials.
  • Responsible for ensuring that the center fully complies with current accreditation standards and ensuring successful re-accreditation working with all center staff in collecting ongoing documentation and supporting evidence.
  • Determines the effective use of personnel in the children’s center structure including maintaining appropriate child-teacher ratios and program quality.
  • Maintain job descriptions; coordinate the hiring and selection of all professional staff for the classrooms.
  • Prepare parent, staff, and student handbooks, develop center policies, and prepare all general enrollment information for users of the center.
  • Disseminate health and safety information to staff, parents, and children, and monitor compliance.
  • Evaluate university staff and classified employees and provide opportunities for professional development.
  • Oversees the hiring process including applications, interviewing, and hiring of student staff.
Supervision/Training
  • Communicate with and train all children’s center staff concerning operating policies and procedures.
  • Performs direct supervision, training, coaching, planning, evaluations, disciplinary actions and terminations as necessary for all direct reports and additional Center staff as needed.
  • Develop and implement ongoing staff development programs for all staff.
  • Orients new classroom staff and volunteers according to licensing rules and Colorado Shines guidelines.
  • Mentors teaching staff in the areas of childcare practices, communication, and education.
Curriculum
  • In conjunction with teaching staff, develops practical, written, short and long-term goals for each program, and ensures appropriate curriculum planning for children.
  • Determine the most effective implementation of a developmentally appropriate high-quality children’s program, which meets the needs of all children.
  • Provide parents and families with opportunities to understand the curriculum approach.
  • Provide parents with biannual conferences with teachers to understand their child(ren)’s developmental progress.
  • Ensure Colorado Shines Environment Rating Scale and Early Learning Developmental Guidelines are followed throughout the five classrooms and work with lead teachers to provide documentation.
General
  • Collaborates with other university programs that utilize the center for student observations, participation or research.
  • Continue to maintain and enhance the university community outreach program to promote the center.
  • Collaborate with health care professionals on campus and local community to provide appropriate referrals.
  • Continue to maintain and upgrade the center, in-center professional library, and parent resource center inclusive of major journals and other literature relevant to the needs of staff and parents.
  • Manages computer software programs for enrollment, billing, and classroom assignments.
  • Creates a variety of reports informing the Assistant Vice Chancellor of budgeting and financial expenditures and enrollment.
  • Remains current with childcare operations, regulatory requirements, and trends on the national and local level, develops strategies, and supervises marketing campaigns to respond to changing market conditions and business practices.
  • Responsible for monitoring grounds, classrooms, and food service. All safety issues and concerns are reported promptly to Finance and Business Strategy Leadership, and ensure the issues and concerns are promptly addressed and resolved.
  • Other duties as assigned.

What We Require

Bachelor’s degree with an emphasis in early childhood education or related field and 4 years of experience as a head teacher, including prior supervisory and childcare administrative experience.

Director qualified as specified by the Colorado Department of Human Services. 7.702.42 Director Qualifications - Large Child Care Center:
  • The educational requirements for the director or substitute director of a large center must be met by satisfactory completion of one of the following. (All course hours are given in semester hours, but equivalent quarter hours are acceptable.) Official college transcripts must be submitted to the Department for evaluation of qualifications.
    • A Bachelor degree in early childhood education from a regionally accredited Colorado college or university; or,
    • A current early childhood professional Credential Level IV Version 2.0 as determined by the Colorado Department of Education; or,
    • A Master’s degree with a major emphasis in child development, Early Childhood Education, Early Childhood Special Education; or,
    • Completion of all of the following 3 semester hour courses from a regionally accredited college or university, at either a two year, four year or graduate level, in each of the following subject or content areas:
      • Introduction to early childhood professions;
      • Introduction to early childhood lab techniques;
      • Early childhood guidance strategies for children;
      • Early childhood health, nutrition, and safety;
      • Administration of early childhood care and education programs;
      • Administration: human relations for early childhood professions or introduction to business;
      • Early childhood curriculum development;
      • Early childhood growth and development.
      • The exceptional child; and, CODE OF COLORADO REGULATIONS 12 CCR 2509-8 Social Services Rules 45
      • Infant/toddler theory and practice; or the Department approved expanding quality infant/toddler training; or,
    • Completion of a course of training approved by the Department that includes course content listed at Section 7.702.42, A, 3, a-j, and experience listed at Section 7.702.42, B
  • The experience requirements for the director of a large center must be met by completion of the following amount of work experience in a child development program, which includes working with a group of children in such programs as a preschool, child care center, kindergarten, or Head Start program:
    • Persons with Bachelor’s or Master’s degree with a major emphasis in child development, early childhood education, early childhood special education, or an early childhood professional Credential Level IV Version 2.0 as determined by the Colorado Department of Education; no additional experience is required.
    • Persons with a 2-year college degree in early childhood education must have 12 months (1,820 hours) of verified experience working directly with children in a child development program.
    • Persons with a Bachelor's degree and completion of courses specified in Sections 7.702.42, A, 3, a-j, must have 12 months (1,820 hours) of verified experience working directly with children in a child development program.
    • Persons who have no degree but have completed the 30 semester hours specified in Section 7.702.42, A, 3, a-j, must have 24 months (3,640 hours) of verified experience working directly with children in a child development program.
    • Verified experience acquired in a licensed Colorado family child care home or school-age child care center may count for up to half of the required experience for director qualifications. To have Colorado family child care home experience considered, the applicant must be or have been the licensee. The other half of the required experience must be working directly with children in a child development program.
    • Experience with 5 year olds must be verified as follows:
      • If experience caring for five year old children occurs in a child care center classroom, the hours worked shall be counted as preschool experience; or,
      • If experience caring for five year old children occurs in an elementary school program, the hours worked shall be counted as school-age experience.


What You Will Need
  • Ability to develop, implement and execute childcare operations and management plans including staffing, costing, child care health, safety and educational development plans.
  • Highly developed oral and written communication skills and ability to relate to people of different backgrounds.
  • Computer literate. Knowledge of Microsoft Office applications.
  • Highly developed time management skills.
  • Effective conflict resolution skills.
What We Would Like You to Have
  • Experience as a director or assistant director in a childcare center with more than 50 children.
  • Experience working with state and federal regulatory guidelines and supported childcare programs.
  • Administrative experience in child care operations including performance management.
  • Prior supervisory and/or management experience.
  • Experience with program management, assessment, and evaluation
Additional Requirements
  • Staff members must be current for all immunizations routinely recommended for adults by their health care provider and CU.
  • All staff members must submit to the center a medical statement, signed and dated by a physician or other health care provider, verifying that they are in good mental, physical, and emotional health appropriate for the position for which they have been hired. This statement must be dated no more than six (6) months prior to employment or within thirty (30) calendar days after the first date of employment.
  • Staff members must comply with all required background check requirements as required in the General Rules for Child Care Facilities.
