The School of Interdisciplinary Studies at Grand Valley State University invites applications for a tenure-line faculty member at the rank of assistant professor to broadly serve the School’s undergraduate programs in Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies and Integrative Studies. The expected start date is August 2025. This position is intended to complement existing strengths in a vibrant unit. Work that decenters the United States or connects experiences of communities within the US to broader regional/global perspectives, including transnational, diasporic and comparative work, is particularly welcomed.

 

Required Qualifications and Education:

  • Must hold a Ph.D. or be ADB with expected graduation date by August 2025 in Women’s Studies, Gender Studies, LGBTQ Studies, Queer Studies, Transgender/Trans Studies, Sexuality Studies, or some combination of these fields. Ph.D.s in other closely related fields with a graduate certificate or coursework in women’s, gender, and sexuality studies, queer, transgender/trans, or LGBTQ studies will be considered.
  • Areas of expertise could include feminist technology studies, transnational feminisms, Indigenous feminisms, reproductive justice; data visualization; and/or climate justice.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusion in teaching, scholarship, and/or service as evidenced by past experience in one or more of those areas.
  • Evidence of an active research or creative agenda.
  • Experience working with and understanding of underrepresented and diverse populations, including non-traditional learners.
  • Interest in teaching in online, hybrid, and face-to-face environments.
  • Willingness to teach undergraduate majors, minors, and non-majors alike across all course levels (e.g., introductory, capstone, general education courses)

 

 Preferred Qualifications and Education:

  • Demonstrated ability to teach a broad range of courses within the Women’s, Gender and Sexuality Studies and Integrative Studies curricula such as WGS 224: Introduction to LGTBQ Studies; WGS 326/INT 326 (Sexuality, Justice, and Advocacy); WGS 365 (Queer Theory); WGS 395 (Women and Gender Studies Research Methods); WGS/INT 402: Feminist Visionary Thinkers; INT 325 (LGTBQ Identities); INT 301 (Interdisciplinary Research Methods); INT 322 (Wicked Problems of Sustainability); INT 323 (Design Thinking for Real World Needs); INT 342 (Food Matters); INT 370 (Anishinaabeg Lifeways: Past, Present, and Future)
  • Additional expertise in an area that directly serves one or more of the following programs: Digital Studies, Latino/a & Latin American Studies, East Asian Studies, Africana Studies, and/or Environmental & Sustainability Studies
  • Professional experience with liberal education and integrative learning.
  • Commitment to interdisciplinary collaboration with colleagues from outside one’s primary field of expertise/training.

 

Responsibilities – Essential Functions:

  • Tenure-line faculty in Brooks College are typically hired on 9-month contracts and teach 18 credits/year, typically divided as three classes in Fall and three classes in Winter Semesters.
  • Tenure-line faculty at Grand Valley State University are expected to maintain a commitment to continual improvement with respect to teaching effectiveness, active scholarly/creative activity, and ongoing service to their unit(s), college, university, the profession, and larger community.
