POSITION SUMMARY : Moravian University invites applications for the role of Dean of Teaching Excellence and Innovation, who leads the Center for Teaching and Learning Innovation. The successful candidate will be a visionary leader committed to enhancing teaching and learning practices, aligning with our Apple Distinguished School status, promoting our ethos of experiential, active learning, and with a student-centered approach. This position plays a pivotal role in fostering academic innovation and supporting student success through the Center for Teaching and Learning Innovation.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES :

Leadership in Teaching and Learning Innovation :
  • Champion innovative teaching strategies and learning technologies, emphasizing our status as an Apple Distinguished School. Develop and implement initiatives that encourage faculty engagement with cutting-edge, evidence-based educational practices, focusing on student-centered experiential and problem-based learning methodologies. Model best and emerging teaching practices by teaching at least one course per year.
Faculty Development and Support:
  • Facilitate professional development opportunities for faculty to enhance instructional skills, including organizing workshops, seminars, and guest lectures featuring experts on latest advancements and best practices including integrating AI and other technologies into teaching and learning. Encourage a culture of continuous improvement in teaching effectiveness, integrating technology and research-based teaching practices techniques. Support faculty in their exploration of the scholarship of teaching and learning and discipline-based educational research.
Retention & Success Strategies:
  • Develop initiatives and training programs for both faculty and staff that improve students' success through innovative teaching methods. Collaborate with other university departments and offices to ensure policies and procedures exist for supporting at-risk students and developing necessary interventions to proactively support their academic journey.
Development of AI-Powered Learning Environments:
  • Remain current with AI technology for teaching and learning and encourage experimentation with innovation uses of AI to support student learning, provide personalized feedback, and support interactive learning experiences in the classroom
Assessment and Quality Assurance:
  • Develop goals and objectives for the Center for Teaching and Learning Innovation. Regularly oversee the assessment of these goals and objectives, including effectiveness of teaching & learning practices in relation to academic support services. Oversee a classroom teaching lab focused on innovative strategies in teaching and learning and their impact on the university. Utilize data-informed approaches to refine strategies and enhance student learning outcomes.
Stakeholder Collaboration:
  • Work closely with various stakeholders, including faculty, administrative staff, and students to foster a cohesive and supportive learning environment. Engage with the broader community of teaching and learning centers.
Develop and oversee a Teaching Innovation lab -
  • Adapt an existing space as an innovation lab for teaching and learning, where users can experiment with emerging technologies and pedagogies.
Budget and Resource Management:
  • Manage the budget and resources allocated for teaching excellence and innovation. Ensure efficient and effective use of resources in achieving strategic goals.
Teaching:
  • The Dean will teach at least 1-2 courses a year, related to student success, first-year programs, or in a discipline in which they have appropriate experience and credentials.
QUALIFICATIONS :
  • Doctoral degree in education, instructional technology, or a related field.
  • Minimum 5 years in higher education, including at least 2 years leading a team.
  • Demonstrated experience in leading academic innovation and faculty development initiatives, with a student-centered approach.
  • Strong understanding of peer-reviewed literature related to the scholarship of teaching and learning, and discipline-based educational research.
  • Evidence of successful teaching with students from a wide array of backgrounds and preparedness for higher education.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and collaboration skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with course evaluation instruments
  • Experience with budgeting and grant writing
