Job Details
The Philosophy Department at Oberlin College invites applications for a full-time tenure track faculty position in the College of Arts and Sciences in Ethics. Initial appointment to this position will be for a term of four years, beginning fall 2025 , and will carry the rank of Assistant Professor.
The Oberlin College Philosophy Department is a supportive community of dedicated teachers and researchers specializing in the philosophy of science, philosophy of mind, epistemology, and aesthetics. With offerings high in student demand, the department is deeply connected to the broader life of the college, sustaining vital interdisciplinary connections to work in other fields, and making important contributions to various programs and concentrations at the College and Conservatory, such as Law and Society, Cognitive Science, Cinema Studies, Music, Education, Global Health, and Business. The major tends to attract bright, creative students, as evinced by the department’s long and outstanding history of producing professional philosophers.
The incumbent will teach the standard teaching load (4.5 courses per year) in the general area of Ethics. The candidate must have a PhD by fall 2025 and be well-placed to teach courses at the introductory and upper undergraduate levels in ethics. We seek an outstanding and supportive teacher who can make philosophy interesting and relevant to a wide range of students. A successful candidate must be prepared to teach a variety of courses in applied ethics such as Business Ethics, Data Ethics, Media Ethics, Environmental Ethics, Food Ethics, Biomedical Ethics, Ethics & Law, and Ethics & Technology.
The incumbent will also be expected to engage in sustained scholarly research and/or other creative work appropriate to the position and participate in the full range of faculty responsibilities, including academic advising, mentoring undergraduate research, and service on committees.
Among the qualifications required for appointment is the PhD degree (in hand or expected by first semester of academic year 2025). Candidates must demonstrate interest and potential excellence in undergraduate teaching. Successful teaching experience at the college level is desirable.
