Summary
Midwestern University College of Veterinary Medicine invites applications for the role of Director of Clinical Operations, AHI for our Animal Health Institute. This leadership position will report directly to the Dean and will play a critical role in advising and assisting with the management and strategic development of all clinical services.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership :
- Act as a visionary leader to advance the Animal Health Institute (AHI) clinical operations.
- Advise the Dean on clinical operations and strategic planning.
- Develop and implement strategic plans to enhance clinical services and maintain competitive market advantage as compared to over similarly situated veterinary colleges.
- Foster leadership skills among Animal Health Institute (AHI) managers, department chairs, clinicians, and technicians.
- Oversee operations of the AHI facilities, including renovations and maintenance.
- Assist Department Chairs and AHI manager and unit managers in the supervision of clinical faculty and staff, ensuring optimal utilization of positions.
- Assist in optimization of average daily transactions for each clinician delivering service in the AHI.
- Provide budget oversight and allocate resources to ensure successful operations.
- Ensure compliance with medical records regulations.
- Oversee electronic health record systems and liaise with IT for updates.
- Serve as a media spokesperson for the AHI.
- Serve as the point of contact for AHI facility needs (closures, renovations, IACUC/USDA/State Board inspections.
- Assist the Dean and other Associate Deans with AHI related events e.g., clinic tours, donors, AVMA/COE), marketing and promotions.
- Meet with the Vice President of Clinic Operations on a regular basis.
- Contribute to the AVMA-COE interim and self-study reports and follow-up.
- Collaborate with the Director of Clinical Education to create partnerships with industry and private sector entities to expand external clinical rotations.
- Aid Chairs and AHI managers (Companion and Large Animal Clinics and the, Diagnostic Pathology Center).
- Manage clinical activities of faculty, locums, house officers, and hospital staff.
- Develop and mentor clinical faculty and staff.
- Work with unit managers to implement training programs for technicians and assistants.
- Ensure high-quality patient and client care.
- Oversee the provision of clinical services and evaluate improvements.
- Ensure compliance with regulatory standards.
- Respond to non-medical client complaints and ensure effective communication.
- Collaborate with the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and the Director of Clinical Education.
- Develop and implement clinical teaching innovations.
- Oversee training programs for interns and residents.
- Mentor faculty in developing clinical rotations and electives.
- Provide clinical research oversight on logistics of conducting trials, ensuring compliance with safety and confidentiality regulations.
- Serve on various committees, including the University Clinic Leadership Committee, Chair-CVM Quality Assurance Committee, Animal Health Institute Operations Committee, and CVM Executive Committee.
- Coordinate marketing operations and community engagement.
- Maintain relationships with referring veterinarians and assess stakeholder satisfaction.
Supervisory Responsibilities
Provide direct supervision to the AHI and unit managers (CAC, DPC, and LAC).
Qualifications

Education and/or Experience
DVM, VMD or an advanced degree such as MS, MBA or PhD in a relevant field is required.
Must have 5-7 years of professional experience in academic administration or corporate veterinary practice management. Board certification in veterinary specialty, membership or affiliation with Veterinary Hospital Management Association (VHMA) or additional advanced training is preferred.
Strong management and mentoring abilities are essential. Must have the ability to work cooperatively and collegially with administration, faculty, and staff with dedication to student education and client/patient care.
Computer Skills
Computer proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).
