Brief Description of Duties
The University of the District of Columbia (UDC) is conducting a national search for a visionary and dynamic leader to become the Dean of the College of Arts & Sciences (CAS). The Dean of CAS is responsible for the academic and administrative leadership of the College, including but not limited to academic planning, enhancement of programs and curriculum, accreditation, recruitment, and retention of faculty and staff, faculty and staff development and evaluation, student recruitment, advising, placement, retention and the securing and allocation of resources. The Dean reports to the Chief Academic Officer and is responsible for assisting in fundraising, for fostering diversity, for the acquisition and advancement of technology and innovation, for promoting multi-disciplinary collaborative research partnerships, for promoting innovative teaching and learning strategies, and for supporting the University’s vision and goals. The Dean provides the overall policies and directions which guide the College.
The leadership provided by the Dean determines the success of the College as well as the quality of programs delivered to students. The Dean will show leadership across a diverse group of disciplines and be able to galvanize and motivate faculty, staff, and students. As a strong advocate for CAS, the Dean will foster an environment committed to continuously improving its administrative systems and structure, raising its visibility, and supporting the advancement of its scholarship and research for faculty, staff, and students.
As a University leader, the CAS Dean will join the Chief Academic Officer and President Maurice Edington to actualize the president’s overarching vision to position UDC as a leading national public urban university through the implementation of the new comprehensive strategic plan. The incumbent functions as Dean, College of Arts and Sciences, Office of the Provost and Vice President, Academic Affairs, University of the District of Columbia and has responsibility for
performing the following duties.

- Provides and promotes academic and visionary leadership to the College.
- Provides oversight of the administration of programs and curriculum.
- Markets the College’s programs and actively recruits students, faculty, and staff.
- Maintains the College’s compliance with accrediting bodies and professional standards.
- Enhances the University’s presence locally, nationally, and globally.
- Acquires and allocates resources.
- Facilitates the acquisition of grants and contracts.
- Plans—in consultation with faculty, staff, and students—and develops short-term and long-range programs and activities which promote and achieve the vision and mission of the College.
- Recruits, employs, and develops a cadre of highly, competent administrative, supervisory, and management staff.
- Manages academic program performance in the College by providing guidelines and evaluating the success of educational programs. In this capacity, reviews proposed new courses and programs, revisions of existing courses or programs, eliminations of courses or programs, and recommends appropriate changes to the Chief Academic Officer. Specifies criteria and approves the schedule of classes, including course offerings and number of sections. Ensures quality standards of instruction in the College, and monitors student recruitment, enrollment, and retention.
- Manages establishing and adhering to a long-range plan for instructional development and improvement in the College, which is consistent with the mission of the College and the University. Communicates effectively with faculty and administrators concerning priorities, philosophy, and capability for instructional development, and encourages appropriate cross-college cooperation and collaboration.
- Provides leadership and management to the directors of UDC research programs under their immediate supervision. In this capacity, the dean encourages each unit to successfully obtain funding from external sources for research grants and contracts.
- Exercises leadership in planning, implementing, and assessing faculty and staff development opportunities. Strategizes budget priorities to optimize professional development resources available to faculty and staff, including professional travel, summer research funding, and consulting and networking supports.
- Leads annual budget-building process for the College and oversees the management of its annual budget expenditures, including extramural dollars. Ensures budget processes comply with applicable policies, procedures, and practices. Facilitates faculty and staff participation in extramural activity, including award of contracts and philanthropic support. Creates a seamless budget management infrastructure that supports the teaching, learning, and research activities of students, faculty, staff, and community partners. Delivers a seamless system of budget support to ensure one-to-one alignment of funding streams with approved outcomes.
- Promotes programs internally and externally through collaboration with UDC Marketing and Communications, to develop and effectively market CAS programs to increase recruitment and elevate the College’s academic profile nationally and internationally.
- Promotes, advocates, and sustains partnerships with regional/community-wide organizations connected with a planned vision for the College.
- Performs a variety of professional and managerial tasks, which may be requested by the Chief Academic Officer or the President or tasks that are necessary to the interest of the College and for the University mission.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
- Terminal degree from an accredited university.
- Earned tenure and faculty rank at the level of full professor preferred. At least seven (7) years of full-time faculty service required. Administrative experience as a director/department chair and assistant/associate dean is required.
- Understanding the interconnectedness of various disciplines within contemporary arts and sciences education and the translation into a set of contemporary majors to prepare for future careers. The ability to foster collaboration and innovation across different departments is essential. Must possess a solid academic background with a commitment to fostering a culture of scholarly excellence and innovation.
- Deep experience developing faculty and supporting faculty progression through the ranks and across the faculty with documented experience of building structure to support faculty.
- Track record of establishing and cultivating internal and external partnerships within colleges at a university and with regional, national, and global organizations and industry leaders, resulting in internships, funding, affiliations, training opportunities, externships, research partnerships, and mentoring opportunities for faculty, students, and staff. Generates opportunities for students to engage in meaningful service, experiential learning, and learning knowledge-based skills, and developing partnerships to reflect real-world opportunities for students and community members.
- Understanding and supporting the work involved with a diverse student population (first-generation, dreamers, adult, and marginalized groups). Track record advocating for and supporting diverse populations and creating an environment supporting individuals to be authentic.
- Experience developing and implementing innovative academic programs responsive to societal and regional needs and trends.
- Strong skills in managing budgets, resources, and fundraising efforts. A solid understanding of financial management principles.
- Experience leveraging technology to enhance teaching, learning, and research, especially integrating online with in-person courses.
